I have a t30 2954 ferguson tractor. I dont know what or how to set igniyion points. Any help would be appreciate.

Old rule of thumb I think used to be the
thickness of a match pack cover like 20
thousands but if you buy a manual it will
tell you everything you need to know and
give you most if not all the specifications
from points gap to head torque or anything
else on the tractor not that I want to push
you away from points but I do believe they
sell electronic ignition for them I bought
it for my te20 and I believe it's probably
the best money I have spent on that tractor
sorry if I was not much help that's just
what I know

The point gap is .022".

Look the distributor over closely, those have a reputation for the shaft to develop side play. There needs to be very little side movement, or the points will not stay set.

Also check the centrifugal advance. The rotor should turn a few degrees CCW then spring back when released. If it won't turn, the distributor needs to come out, be taken apart, everything freed up and lubricated.

I'll second the electronic conversion. The conversion kit replaces the troublesome points, and doesn't care if there is a little wear in the shaft. Be aware though, the electronic kits are voltage and polarity sensitive.

If you do buy points, best go with a name brand. They are all aftermarket, poor quality.

I have a TO-20, all original, 6v pos grnd with points, runs like a top. Just did a quick search for electronic ignition just in case. Do they have one for 6v pos grnd? I didn't see one.

Thanks. Maybe next time if I can't get quality points I will make the switch, But as I say, right now it runs like a top. I bought it like this but I believe it is running on NAPA points according to service records. Are there different types/quality of NAPA points?

Might be beneficial for a V-8 engine at higher rpm. For an old tractor running low rpm it would be an over-kill. Won't hurt but won't benefit.

(quoted from post at 06:12:40 04/25/18) PS-What do you think about their "40,000 volt flame thrower" coil? Just Hype???

I have a 6 volt and a 12 volt on my two tractors and I believe they made a big improvement. Especially with cold starting. To get any benefit though, you need to increase the spark plug gap to about 0.040".
