I am in the process of fixing up an old TO 30. Going to change the oil in the rear end and was wondering what oil to use? Do I use what the book says or is there a better oil?

That TO30 was built 5o to 60 years ago. There have been a few improvements in oils since then. If you want the best, look for a Trans-hydraulic synthetic oil. Otherwise any trans-hydraulic oil will be better than the original.

GL-1 90 weight mineral oil non-detergent was designed for the tractor,
Mineral oil was used because the transmission has bronze bearings, newer detergent oils have chemicals that can attack bronze,

Detergent oils are designed to hold dirt particles, so as it passes through the transmission oil filter, the dirt will be taken out, these old tractors do not have transmission oil filters, so with detergent oil the dirt particles go right through the hydraulic oil pump and valves, not good,

I put GL-1 in my old 1957 TO 35; but as was mentioned earlier in the winter the lift is slow to operate,

If I had to change oil again I believe at this stage in the tractors life I would just use a heavy duty diesel oil like 15w40 an be done with it,

Note to file: in England I understand you can buy non detergent 15w40 oil, so far I never found it over here,
