Howdy, I am new to tractoring and just bought this old fergie. It seemed too good of a deal to pass and of course it very well might have been! It was stuck in first gear so I figured it was just bound up like these old tractors get. Removed the top cover and all selectors were lined up perfectly. I drained the oil and at the bottom of the pan I saw the bottom half of the 1st and 2nd gear selector fork. Now I'm trying to track one down. Found some used ones but nervous to get one because what if its bent, cracked, etc etc. I have never done anything like this and dont even know where to start. Never worked on a tractor other than the last couple days. As far as splitting it, no idea what I'm getting myself into. I've mechanic'ed a bit throughout my life but this seems beyond anything I have done. If someone has some advice and also maybe a list of parts to buy so I can tear it apart and put it back together as fast as possible. Where to split it, what gaskets to buy, any other sleeves or bearings of parts to replace why I'm in there etc etc. Thanks in advance

Welcome Swmmsc!

The very first and most important thing you can do is invest in a shop manual.

You can get them used on Ebay, a small investment that will save a lot of money and frustration!

I doubt you will find a new fork unless you luck into a NOS somewhere. A used one will probably be ok, just look it over carefully.

"Splitting" the tractor requires a good concrete working surface to do it safely. It comes apart where the engine block bolts to the bell housing. Typically the rear portion is blocked up, the front components are removed, the engine is supported with a rolling engine hoist. Just be careful, the components are bulky and heavy.

Before going into it though, if you can the transmission into a usable gear, temporary it back together and take it for a shake-down run. That way you can make note of any other problems before doing major disassembly. Nothing worse than getting it all back together and finding another problem that could have easily been corrected the first time.

Keep posting and asking! Lots of good help here. No such thing as a dumb question!

Tha is man, I actually ended up buying a used one from Texas. Hopefully it works out. It was 30 bucks. I found 1 new one at another shop in Texas for 110 which seemed pricey. Thank you though. I will keep you posted on any updates

There are so many shop manuals, so you have a recommendation on which to get? None of them have great reviews for in depth type of work. For regualr maintenance they are great but in depth transmission work.....who knows. I know there used to be a transmission manual but I can't find it. Another forum i was in the guy had a copy of it. He sent me a couple pictures of it but I can't find a copy. Also, not sure which gear to push/pry to pop it out of 1st. Thank you for the advice so far.

The manual I have is an I&T, not the best but covers the basics. It is geared more toward the experienced mechanic, so doesn't go into the minute details.

There are others out there, but no experience with them.

Sometimes a good parts book will be helpful.

One thing to remember, the old tractors are built simple and solid. They are designed to be field serviceable with basic tools and skills, not like modern equipment with exacting tolerances and special procedures and tools. Just take your time, make notes, take pictures. I like to bag and label parts, just in case something happens I don't go back together as quickly as planned.

As for locating first gear, I don't have a manual for a 20, mine is a 35, different trans. just look for the gear with the missing fork, slide it to neutral. It helps to raise one rear wheel, that gets the load off the gears so it will slide easier and no surprises when it does come out of gear. Be sure the broken fork is not going to get into anything if it's still in there.

So I've ordered a shop manual and a parts book. It'll be here next week sometime. In the mean time I was wondering if you could look in your book and find the part numbers for the gaskets I'll need to replace between the motor and gear box and gear box and rear end. Also anything else you think I should replace while I'm in there? Rear main seal etc etc?

you can go here: http://www.agcopartsbooks.com/PartsBooksN/login.aspx?region=NorthAmerica and find the parts book for your tractor - from that page I click 'view books' and on the next page I click 'browse books' rather than 'search by model' - that doesn't work for me - anyway, click on 'Massey Ferguson' from the drop down menu, then click on 'parts books', then click on 'tractors', then on 'Ferguson', then on 'TO20....'

it takes several clicks to get there, but then you can find the factory part numbers for all the items which is a big help when searching for parts -

good luck
David
