Starter question

I have a TO30 that I'm doing some work on - part of the work was to repair the gearshift/start switch linkage that had been abandoned before I got the tractor. A automotive style key switch has been used to start the machine. Dangerous from the standpoint that the tractor does not have to be out of gear to crank/start.

OTOH, I can remove the key and the machine is dead. I sometimes set the tractor, remove the key, and let young people climb on and play. It occurs to me that with the original starter mechanism working, removing the key would not prevent the machine from cranking, right? Playing with the gearshift is one of the things the kids do and I don't want them to be able to engage the starter, even if the tractor would not move or start.

I may not change back to the original mechanism...

An option may be to put a battery quick disconnect on so that when you are not using the tractor having the battery off would prevent 1. The
battery from draining and 2. Make it unable to crank over. I have one on my positive terminal and it works great. Putting the original start
switch back into working order would be best as then no one would be able to start it in gear.

Another option would be to leave the starter solenoid on, run a wire from the ignition side of the key switch to the original starter switch, the other side of the starter switch to the S terminal of the solenoid .

That way the ignition would have to be on, and the trans in neutral before it would start.

I don't see the downside, that's an excellent suggestion and something I hadn't thought of - thanks -
