Remove bottom round plate-remove snap ring-pull gear out a little and let gear drop
down -then you can remove retainer housing. There is two seals. Retainer has two snap
rings that lets you take retainer apart so you can see seals.Hope this helps.
 
Been many years since I did that seal, don't remember having much trouble with any of it.

If the inner shaft dropped, might try putting the trans in gear and gently turn one rear wheel as you go in with the input shaft assy. That should load the gears enough to bring the shaft back up.

As for the snap ring, that can probably be bought from a bearing supply or McMaster Carr.
