Adding a resistor to 12V starter motor

I have a TO30 with the 12V conversion kit. I'm replacing the starter motor. After having blown the previous one.

A friend of mine said that old vehicles typically need a resistor between the battery and the starter. Does anyone else put a an extra resistor there?

No way to buy a resister that has a large enough amp rating to handle the amp draw of a starter. Most of my tractors are 12 volt with 6 volt starters on them and I have yet to burn up a starter. The key to not harming the starter is to only spin the engine over for short periods of time do not sit and crank it for minutes at a time or yes you will let the smoke out of a starter be it 6 or 12 volts.

No. On a 6 to 12 volt conversion a resistor is often added between ignition switch and 6 volt coil, but not to starter circuit

Many 6 volt starters have been used successfully with 12 volts.

Starter will rotate same direction regardless if positive or negative ground.

We have a 1954 flathead Ford truck that was converted to 12 volt. It is a Lucas system.

My friendly auto elec put 12 volt field coils in the 6 volt starter to tame it down some.
