to-35 paint color

I have a 1955 model to35 ser# 164776. What is the correct paint codes for that serial number? Is it the green or the red? I saw some early 55's with greenish body. I know they did 35's in both schemes. I pulled the engine today to rebuild it and it is red inside bell housing. The exterior has red fenders, hood and dash with silver wheels and body.

I like the red so will maybe stay with that for tinwork. I found a red paint from Tisco TP300, or Dupont 77932 Dulux, or Van Sickle 182 gloss red. Any preferences on these? And then I like the Flint Metallic gray for body of tractor.

You can use these bottom three to find the different colors & the correct colors. Since you have a 1955 TO 35 it left the factory as a Light Gray sheet metal and Dark Green Metallic castings. Yours is a late enough 1955 it was a 12 volt when it left the factory. It is your tractor so you can paint it any color you want. If possible you might want to go to a few tractor shows to see the difference in the correct colors and what you think you want to paint it. Hopefully there will be some painted the correct colors that you can make up your mind.
Please keep showing us pictures of the work in progress. Thank you.

Since we're on the subject I have a what is stickered as a ferguson 35 but the serial tag is missing. How do I narrow it down to a year?

Dealers repainted the 55--57 Ferguson's red and flint gray like the MF when they were traded in's. They didn't sell if original color. The 55's were green and gray tin. After Massey Harris bought Ferguson in 1954 MHF was testing different colors. Some model year were different colors depending on serial number. In 1958 when it became MF all were painted red and flint gray. So this is why everyone wanted the red-flint gray like their neighbor with the new MF.

If it is a 35, it will have 2 shifters, high and low range.

Look for casting dates on the engine and transmission housings.

There were also different hood arrangements. Mine is a 60 model, it has a single hood latch, older models had 2. Not sure of the exact designs, but something to research.

you must first determine the year your TO was made.
Ferguson must have gotten a special on paint when they were building TO's
1955- green/gray
early 1956- green/beige (most rare)
late 1956 - gray/beige
1957 - gray/beige
1958- forward gray/red
I believe on the left side of this site you can find a list of serial numbers that will tell you when your tractor was made.
all is clear, but the early 1956 models as i do not think anyone is positive as to what serial number when they changed from green/beige to gray/beige.
guess they changed when the green paint tanks ran dry and were cleaned an recharged with gray paint,
who knows,

The TO 35's were still Ferguson with badge on front of hood and decals until 1961 models when it was changed to MF. Had a single hood latch starting in late 1957. They were painted red and flint gray beginning in 1958 but still a Ferguson. Only the TO 35.

Some former Ferguson employees would tell you that there is no such thing as the 'correct' red colour. A guy who used to work in the Kilmarnock plant in Scotland says the yard was full of a whole variety of shades - bought from whatever paint company had the best deal on the 'near enough' red colour at any given time. For me, just having done a recent restoration, I reckon the RAL number for the best red colour is 3002. Hope this helps.
