I have a 1952 12V TEA20-85 Ferguson Tractor and I am having some starting issue which are electrical...I think. The problem first started as if it was a starter issue at times the tractor would start just find, but sometimes when I would push in the gear stick into the starting position all I would get is a "humming noise", the starter would not turn over it would seem. I replaced the starter and at first it turned over but then some smoke could be seen from the electrical block that attaches onto the frame of the tractor below the battery, see attached picture. I again tried to start the tractor and was again getting the "humming noise" but nothing was happening. Not sure what is going on here, any insight would be appreciated. This tractor does have a key that you must turn to allow the gear stick to start the unit.

Is your Tractor a FACTORY 12 VOLT system? or a 6 VOLT converted to a 12 VOLT Battery and charging system?

Pictures of factory 12 VOLT system:

Thanks Bob for the email and pic. Yes it certainly looks like my electrical system, I have also attached a pic of the current electrical block which I think is item #22 from your image which is the switch and the area where smoke was coming from. Would you think my issues maybe associated with switch?? Thanks Alan

The smoke is an indication of a high resistance connection.

Find the smoke, feel for heat, look for evidence of burned insulation, heat discolored wire, and you will find the problem.

Probably a loose connection, bad crimp, corrosion...

If the smoke came from the starter switch contacts, they could be dirty, out of adjustment, or need replacing.
