Hi I have a similar problem, no tractor SN plate or date stamp to be found anywhere!
However I do have an engine SN number 'S10066E' can anyone help me find a date for this engine?
Any help much appreciated

If you supply the numbers as per picture, someone shall tell you the year Diff. was manufactured:

From that serial number, it is likely built in 1947. Get the date code that John Deere asked for on the transmission, right side. Also there is an engine date code behind the generator.

Thanks Bob, unfortunately I've looked there and can't see anything, I'd add a picture but I'm new to this and not worked out how yet

No luck with date code on transmission, there's
nothing there. I've not looked behind the generator
thought so I'll give that a go!

Ok so I cant see anything on the right side (as you sit on the tractor) but i found this on the left, I know you cant read it, ill have to clean it up but from your picture its not the correct stamp anyway...

Had a look behind the generator this morning and there is nothing there either??? I'll try and get some better quality photos and upload them this afternoon now I've worked out how to do it

There are quite a few examples of castings that have no date in existence , the ' date man ' must have been away sick when they were cast .
Try looking carefully at the generator itself , Mr Lucas very kindly stamped them with their year of manufacture , the coils , if original were also stamped as were a [ very ] few radiators .

Thanks Charles, cant see anything on the generator and pretty sure coils are not originals, however there is something on a very rusty radiator plate! I might
need a forensic team to read it but im getting closer to finding out when this little fergie was made!!!

Ok heres some more photos, as you can see there's nothing on the right side of the tractor but there is a stamp on the left that might read... [3] [3] [47]
What do you think? am I just seeing things?

one last try...

Yes I think it either [3] [3] or [3] [8] [47]
Am I right in thinking that would be 3rd of march/august 1947?

Thanks for all your help

Im going to have a go with a wire brush and see if i can clean it up a bit

Ive been out with the wire brush (and a better camera) its amazing the difference its made.

Not [3] [3] [47]

Now quite clearly [5] [3] [47] which I think means made on 5th of March 1947

Anyone know what all the other numbers mean???

Again many thanks for every ones help

Yes BTM Steve.........this is my TEA-20. I maintain the cemetery on our property. This little beast runs a PTO driven grass mower. I have another THREE TEA-20's I use for parts donors. I have owned and or my family has owned since new....1951.

On a TEA engine, the serial number is stamped (usually very faintly) on a raised boss immediately to the right of the right hand bolt that secures the ignition coil.

I've just read that back, don't know what i was thinking as it is "quite clearly" [5] [2] [47] which I think means made on 5th of February 1947

Thank you, I have found that now, but how do i find out information related to that number? is there a list somewhere thats tell you engine SN manufacture dates?

No, there is no such list. In some cases there is the first serial number built that year. So you can guess if it were early, middle or late that year.

Good morning "BTM Steve"

Have you considered starting a TOPIC entitled something like eg. " TEA-20 Tractor S# and Engine S# if you KNOW for SURE engine is original"

I own TEA-20 S#182991 (1951).... Engine S# S105046E

" " " " S#251562 (1952)..... Engine S# SC16861E

I'm away from my summer residence for several months.I do not know off hand the info off my other two TEA-20's

There has been one started here... http://greyfergieforum.com/viewforum.php?f=76&sid=57fb9a91d374ba0ac623916826f6147b

A determining factor will be the voltage that it first ran on from new . A 1947 tractor will most definitely have been six volt and if fitted with a Standard Motor's engine will have the water pump attached to the head .
Casting marks other than those next to the dip stick and under the dynamo can be ambiguous . In almost every case I have seen the year of manufacture is never given as two digits , rather only the last digit of the decade . 1940's built tractors invariably have 6, 7 , 8 , or 9 cast as the year , a zero would denote the decade of 1950 as would 1,2,3,4 and 5. The production run ran from 1946 to 1956 , any single digits over 6 would be from the 1940's .
A few detailed photographs might help narrow the year down , the independent brake pedals for a start , the water pump as mentioned , the starter motor and adjacent bell housing and the dash .

Ok Im not going to be able to get back in the barn until Monday now but I know its running on 6 volt power supply, and I'm sure its got a Standard Motor's engine.
Im also pretty sure the water pump is fitted to the head but I'll post some pics to confirm. It has independent brake pedals, am i looking to photograph something
specific about them or just to see if it has them or not? Ill get as many pic's as I can, starter, housing and dash etc and anything else that looks interesting.

Thanks again for your help, Ill post the pic's ASAP

No need for more photos if you are certain it is a six volt and it has the water pump mounted on the head . Both are indicative of a tractor built before December 1951 so the estimate of 1947 is most likely correct although I've never personally seen a date code quite like that one .
The independent brake pedal foot plates are very small in comparison to later ones . The starter motor on 12 volt models requires a bulge in the bell housing not seen on 6 volt models .

Years ago I had a TEA website, and I was collecting serial numbers of known tractors, as submitted by owners. I didn't get very far with the serial numbers before geocities websites were all taken down, and I never had the time to recreate the website, as it was a large project. However there is an archive of former websites, so if I wanted (or ever had the time) I could reconstruct it all. Here is a link that shows the list of serial numbers that I did manage to collect:

https://web.archive.org/web/20091022104308/http://geocities.com/wallaces_23/crossreference.html

Thats really interesting, I think I will definitely look into compiling a 'quick reference guide' for serial numbers and date codes etc, just need to come up with
an easy way for people to brows and contribute to it

Great pictures, I'm sure mine is the earlier 6 volt model now. Ill get some pic's posted on Monday, she's looking a bit rough at the moment but im trying my best
to restore original parts rather than replace them so its gonna be a long restoration

Thanks Everyone for all your help, here's some pics of my 'little grey fergie' (well it'll be grey again one day)
