Rear linkage/pto

G'day as I am still new and learning this whole tractoring thing can someone please give me a run down on what I need to know about the rear linkage. I have worked out how to connect an implement but I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Also wanted to know exactly what the chains are for and whether a pto guard is a good idea.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Glad you are asking great questions. To answer your question on the three point hitch we need to know what
implement you are attaching. The stay chains that are on the lift arms limit the travel and prevent your implement from traveling too far left or
right and into the fenders or tire.. a PTO cover is a nice safety device to keep long grass and other debris from rapping around it. Please
remember that you should never be near the pto when it is running.

Thanks Tom, mainly there is a slasher attached but I also have a carryall and a smudger.

So once I connect the 3 points of an implement I need to shorten the sway chains to remove lateral movement. What is the handle on the right lift arm for?

Also I have noticed the pto shaft cover is damaged from where it as rubbed on the edge of the slasher because the slasher has been lifted to high. Is there anything that can stop this?

Can you post a picture of the pto cover. Simple thought is if it is in the way and getting damaged then remove it. As far as stopping the
swinging of the lift arms when traveling, you can add a stabilizer arm and bracket. This forms a simple triangle between your implement and
the tractor and the swaying is nearly eliminated. Those parts are available here.

The standard check chain is 7 links with a clevis on each end. Normally, the chain should not need adjusting.
The handle on the right side is for leveling. Primarily when using a plough. Once you get the first furrow turned and the tractor wheels are in the furrow, you need to adjust so that the plough share(s) are level.

Handle on right lift arm is to adjust that arm up and down to change how your implement is positioned. A lot of times the ancient grease that is
in the screw mechanism is congealed and you may have to heat it with a torch to get it to move and then clean out and re-grease it. All of those
parts are also here if it needs to be rebuilt.

I will also suggest picking up a manual for you tractor and possibly the repair manual too. Again also available here.

You should invest in a pair of stabilising bars for reducing movement with carryalls and other load carrying implements . These attach to brackets under the back axle ; one per side , your tractor may already have them fitted . The bars are simple , flat and have a hole in each end , one end to the bracket the other end at the implement hitch pin , almost a must for any slasher . Don't shorten the chains or they will simply snap when the lift is raised .

Thanks Charles I will have a look underneath, not sure if those brackets are there though.

In my head I had been thinking of the newer type tractors with turnbuckle style chains, thinking I could retrofit something like that.
