TO35 Tractormeter Drive Take-off Assembly

I am restoring a 1960 Ferguson TO35, gas engine, that may have come, originally, without a Tractormeter. I want to install one but I can not find where the Drive Take-off Assembly is suppose to be located. The generator has been replaced with a Ford alternator and I can't find a replacement generator that announces that it has an Assembly or that it would permit installation of an Assembly. I also find no provision for the Assembly around the alternator.
The parts manual shows a Drive Take-off for the diesel but nothing for gas.
Can anybody help?

I too was interested in one for my 57 to35 but after reading archives saying they are made in China and don't last long, I decided to fake mine by copying a pic on photo paper and sticking it to the face, well at least it looks good.

Thanks for the idea 2tractors.

I now find what is called a "Proofmeter Drive Assembly" listed for sale online. It preceeds listings for the Tachometer and companion cable needed for installation. It appears the Proofmeter drives the tachometer and installs on the back of a Delco generator as a replacement of the backplate. Comments welcome from anybody in the know.

rear end of the generator armiture needs to be drilled and tapped for the drive gear

might want to root around in the boneyards or post on Craigs for used generator already set up

Thanks much Supergrumpy. I have a feeler out now to one old boy that has been in the business for several years. He has barns full of salvaged parts but he was at a loss when I told him what I wanted. Must be unusual for the TO35 to have had Tachometers. Oh well, if I do succeed with this project I will certainly remember the effort. Thanks again friend, I will keep looking.

I have a 6V genny with the tach drive. Long story short, I changed the windings to make it 12V and all it does now is "motor". Her Fergy currenly is running an alternator and someday I might put the tach drive back on it.
Last one I saw sell went around $250? Been quite a while. Still $250 won't get me to part with mine.

Thanks for the offering Bruce. With all the effort going into my 35 I also really want to add the tachometer. Seems like I could find a generator either with the tach drive included or is adaptable to taking a drive assembly.
As for my previous request for info on a Proofmeter Drive I have since veered into the answer. Seems that Proofmeter is simply another name for a tachometer. I wish all of my dilemmas with this project can be solved this easily.

I'm new here but have the same problem, ford alt. in place of original generator before i bought the tractor. Mine is a TO-35 , continental engine, that did come with the tractor- meter. You might give this guy a call , 231-846-8243.'Old Tractor Company',Franktown Co. I spoke to them about two weeks ago and they said they can still get a generator with the drive on it. I searched there site and found one for the Ford tractor ,65 to 75 4cy,2000 to 7000 series and 68 to 70 6cy 8000 series. I never got back to them to see if that was the one they were talking about. But it looks like something i could make work. They have a picture of it in there catlog listings #FDS403 at $109.95 8) ...JIM

Thanks much 4on-the-floor for the information. I will save this as a backup plan. As of yesterday I received a generator from All States Ag Parts that is suppose to work with my 1960 TO-35. The back of the shaft is tapped so as to receive the Tach Drive Assembly. My new problem is that the spacing of the mounting arms does not match the bracket on my tractor. I called Ag Parts in Black Creek, Tel # 877-530-2010, gave them the measurements of my bracket and their generator and the Rep said only that he would get the info to John (?). He would fix me up(?). I am going to call them back, when finished here, and clarify that message. I am also going to order the pulley for a TO-35 so that the Tach will be properly calibrated. I hope this info also helps you in your quest. Brian

Update to 4on-the-floor. I just contacted All States again, clarified what I had and ordered the remainder of what I need to replace the tachometer on my "35". I told "John" that I provided you with their company name and phone # in case you decide to also call them. Be sure to give them the serial # on your "35" as it affects both the type of generator and the tractormeter assembly. Good luck, Brian

.............................................................................................................. Do they sell parts though a online catlog ? I see they have generators listed there. I have a proof reader or what ever they call it,but it's on a 6 volt generator and i have 12 volt. :) ...JIM

To 4on-the-floor. For the All States Ag Parts website you will have to Google them. Their website had a generator listed for our "35" but the listing stated that the Tach Drive Assembly was not included. That prompted my call to them to find out if the generator provided for connecting the Assembly. They said that it did and it does. I tried Yesterday's Tractor Company first but their listing states that their generator does not include and does not provide for connecting the Tach Drive. Good hunting, Brian

To Brian, I found the site . What is the part number for the generator you got and I only saw a regulator for 6 volt. Do they have the 12 volt and what is the part number. I have the proof reader that attaches to the generator if i can remember where i hid it from myself in the shop. It's on a 6 volt generator but i think it still works, if i can just find it now. This is something i have been wanting to do for about 15 years now, getting the tractometer working. :) _JIM

The All States part # for the generator they sent is 203175. The Massey parts book shows 5 different 12V generators with only one identified as to which serial #'s it fits. That being Massey # 182455 M91 that fits tractor serial # 161250 and up. I am not certain which one of the 5 that All States sent me but I believe it is the "solid type" that does not have the front ventilating fan. The 12V Voltage Regulator # from both the Massey catalog and Yesterday Tractor is 182548M92. The YT price is $32.89 plus shipping. I do not know if a 6 Volt system Tach will work properly with a 12V generator. I am getting a used Tach for about $35.00. Good luck, Brian

Thanks Brian, that's the number i thought would work for me. The serial number on mine is #SHM 197273,I understand from what i'v found out the letter [ H ] makes it a high altitude engine , ZB-134 continental. Mine has the tack in it but the old proof reader was from one of my dads TO-35 ,6 volt generator. I may have given it to my brother as he has dads old tractor,so i can just buy a new one i guess. Keep us updated as to how it's all working out. :) _ JIM

Looks like I may be way late to the party, but am going to post & see what comes up anyway. I recently acquired a '56 TO-35 in decent shape (all parts present & not beat up) that I will be using initially before I begin a serious restoration. First thing I noticed when picking up the tractor was that there was a hole in the dash staring back at me where the "Tractometer" had been. Once I did a little reading I realized that it had been removed (as extraneous) by the previous owner (I got the tractor from a small dealer who had taken it in as a trade) when it had been converted from a generator system to an alternator system.

My question is - has anyone figured out a way to hook up the "Tractormeter" drive in a TO-35 using an alternator? I know I can simply get a Hobbs-meter & install it in place of the "Tractormeter," but that will only give me the running time on the tractor, not the same info the "Tractometer" shows. Or is my only option going back to the generator setup? Thanks for any replies, advice.

You can get an alt. with a tractometer [ tach ] cable hook up on the back of it . I can't remember tonight who has them , just do an internet search you should come up with one some place . I got the new tractormeter [ tach ] for mine and am going to just get my generator rebuilt . Or I can get a new off shore , probably China made new generator with the cable drive on it , about a couple of hundred .
