I think the latter. but its a horror show and then some underneath. Crank is badly hurt.

Bearing looks to have had dirt in oil. Has oil been changed regularly. What do you think made oil pump gear to break.

In my opinion, that is a terrible way to hold the gear to the shaft. How could you have gotten oil flow out the line if it was locked up so bad? How bad is the crank? At least it didn't wear through the babbit on the bearing shell.

the crank is in bad shape but may be salvageable. #4 connecting rod the bearing shell was toast. Crank will need turned.

Dont know and dont know. I got it as a tractor with an awful noise- I never ran it but once to start it hear the awful noise and stop. The pistons were loose in the sleeves - you could wiggle 'em wiht your fingertip. #1 con rod cap was actually loose on the crank.

I also need a clutch... the plate was shattered. The flywheel doesnt look great either.

Don't know what you paid for tractor. You may just think about using it for parts and find another one. You can get more in it than it's worth. Be costly rebuilding engine and clutch even if you do it yourself.

yeah thought about it, will rebuild myself and then Ill have one I know is good. I'll sell something else. Even at a $800 in parts and a few hundred in machine shop time I could still sell and come out ahead.

New clutch material no longer has copper in it. More steel and a better chance to rust to the flywheel. You can then either block the clutch down with a 2X4 or hold in place with a "C"clamp. Either way to keep it open while parked or stuff in a Kevlar clutch disc.
Chances are also good you have some hot spots in that flywheel. Good for a trip to the machine shop.

Bearing CRUSH is something there was NONE of on a MF 88 on several of the Connecting rods after the engine operated with little or NO OIL PSI. The same on one of the MAIN bearing block BORES:
