Subsoiler / ripper

I was lucky to be able to find this subsoiler , a fairly rare thing here in Australia . Samn 40 has sorted me out as far as the odd loose toplink but there is the problem of the strange bracket at the base , behind the foot . I don't know what this is for , a pipe layer or perhaps a mole weight on a chain to create a water channel underground ?
This implement is almost the same as Steve Bieberich's example ,

except for this weird bracket and some side stays .
Any suggestions or photos from anyone ?

I think the adapter was added in the 1980's or 90's, to sneak a cable tv wire from the neighbor's house. The pipe layers I've seen have a curve more like a tubing or conduit bender.
My old place had clay drain pipe in hand dug trenches 5 or 6 feet deep in some spots. I wonder what those guys did in their spare time???
This thing pulling a slug would have all plugged up in the first rain with that wet dirt.

(quoted from post at 23:36:07 09/10/14) Is yours a Ferguson? I have the D-Be-28 Ferguson.

Yes it is Miner , I thought it might have been Massey Harris Ferguson , but it looks as if it is Massey Ferguson . The plate is aluminium , two rivets with a Massey number on it ?? 27 . Must be later than yours but still much the same implement .

I think the attachment on the back of the point of the sub soiler is for a ball or some pipe cleaners call them pigs.

the pig follows the point of the sub soiler and insures the hole made by the point does not fall in on itself. They must not be popular as few sub soilers I found have the pig option.

Thanks maxwell , that seems to be a reasonable explanation . The circular hole facing upwards and closest to the blade appears to be a socket for the bottom of the cable/pipe laying attachment .

Looks like I picked up one of these recently too, dont happen to have a manual for it.

chat soon, been busy with family and following up with Wifeys book launch.
Oh, I didnt do hay this year, decided to cut early and beat the grass seeding and put some structure into the soil.
yep, had to do several follow up cuts as things are still growing like crazy here.

Trains

I found , restored and have used the Mole drainer attachment Trains , it works very well .
It is very hard to use the subsoiler without the correct top link , I ended up using a long adjustable from my FE35 . The problem occurs when you want to move it , the implement is so long that it will drag onto the ground unless supported properly .
A bit of rope and some ingenuity will soon fix this though .
It is simply used , lower it until the cutter foot just scraps and drag a line along the path you want , turn around and repeat a little deeper taking a few inches at a time until you are used to it . Always use the draught control top hitch , if you use the fixed point you run the real risk of toppling backwards if the blade hits a rock or root .
Cut to the depth you want before using the drainer , this can be used for improving pasture drainage or , in my circumstance laying black poly pipe in long lengths . With some mucking about and patience I think you could bury electrical conduit in much the same way .

Here is one mounted and working , it gives an indication of just how deep they can go if handled correctly .

And mine shortly after completion .
