TO30 3-point arms travel

I am rather new to operating a 'Ferguson System' .. My hydl. control seems very sensitive. I was using a small disk harrow, for the first time, wanting to raise it enough to turn around. Just enough to clear the ground and not all the way up. It often wanted to go up to the mechanical limit. And the up limit was when the chains tightened, straining the arms.. Is this normal?
What is the actual built-in up limiter...Thanks for advice.

Old fergies were either all up or all down by design. Ford initially used the same design. You might look into "position control" and that will help you get the real control you desire. 8N was the first tractor in the Ford/Fergy line to have position control built in.
Others with more info should chime in shortly to assist you.

Well, welcome to the Ferguson system. It was designed for draft control and ground engagement for plows and such. There was no true position control only draft for the height of a furrow. So when using a harrow when you lift it up you will have to find a sweet spot on the lift quadrant that stops the lifting lowering each time. As others noted you can build a position control add on. Search the archives for Zane thang.

OK, Well I realize that there is a mechanical 'up' limit. Is that the way it works ? just lift until it stops.
However, Maybe my chains are a little short, as they are the up limit ! that makes the hydraulics strain... and pulls
on the arms. ?? I assume the chains are for side to side movement limits. Not for limiting 'up travel'...

Your chains are too short. Lengthen them a link or 2 if you can.
As for holding position. On my TO20 that I do not use ground engaging implements,
I tighten the the spring by the top link so it has no free play. Set my stop on the quadrant so when I raise and then lower to desired height it pretty much stays put.
Not perfect but better than you have now. It will hold my brush hog to desired height for minutes.

The chains limit both the up travel and side-to-side movement. There should be 9 links, including the 2 links with the bolts.

ckain, count your chain links there should be 7 links plus one clevis on each end as Ron(Ont) mentioned. DO NOT add more that you will get into trouble. Is it possible your chains are connected to the bottom hole? They should be in the top hole. Also that piece the clevis hooks to should be pointing away from the rear end housing. If none of this works maybe Dieseltech can make you a loan to trade tractors if you are so inclined.

Well Thanks Richard L, I went to the shed to check on what you described. Not having much experience with the Fergusons, I had not noticed the incorrectness of the chain brackets, or anchors, to the rear end assy. The chain clevis was connected to the bottom hole and the bracket was angling 'in' towards the tractor. I removed one side and flipped it 180 deg, top & bottom, the chain appeared more correct, links straighter and of course that put the clevis in a 'top' hole. That looked so good, I did the same to the other side. I can see by the hidden paint, it has been that way quite awhile. Much longer then what I've owned the tractor.
I have not tried it out, as it's so rainy here. It definitely could solved my issues. THANKS for all replys..

You are welcome & thank you for the follow up on how it was fixed. Wish more would do that. Good luck & hope that is all that was wrong with that. This is a good forum as there are many great people with suggestions on most things.
