Starter problem

My TO 20 decided it would not start with the gear shift. I have pulled off/out the start switch and it still works as it should and the rod is still connected. I pulled off the shift cover and have no idea of what I am looking at or where to start. Any ideas?

As you have done, the start switch attaches with two bolts to the start switch plate which is movable front to back by loosening the four bolts and sliding it forward and aft till the starter engages with the shifter. The easiest way is to get the four bolts loose enough and tap or pry the plate till the starter works and retighten bolts. Or do it the electrical way with an ohm meter and see when the switch engages, still by tapping or prying the plate then pushing the shifter. I have had two plates that needed adjustment and three switches that had to be replaced over 10 TO 30's hat I have worked on.

Great to hear. Did the same thing with one of mine. Scotched my head for a while then shifted the other way and fixed! I have purchased a few other TO30's that had good switches that were bypassed with solenoids. I put all of those back to correct and worked fine with a little adjustment to the plate.
