something is amuck as I tried it both ways and the tach will not spin even though the tach drive does spin the cable. time has run out as the wife has arrived. tomorrow is another day !

I believe the big end goes to the tach.

You should be able to spin the tach by hand and see the needle move.

On back of the tach, the piece the cable drives, it should turn effortlessly, make the tach needle move the same direction you spin it.

Another test, start the engine with the tach end of the cable disconnected. Carefully squeeze the turning cable with your fingers. You should not be able to stop it. If it stops, there is a problem with the drive gears on back of the generator, or the cable is not fully inserted into the drive gear.

while I had the tachometer off for tractor paint, on my old TO35, I coated the cable and inside the tachometer with dry graphite,

tachometer still works well today and that was years ago, but then my old tractor almost never sets outside unless I am using it. having one stored in the barn really helps preserves the old tractor.

I had the same problem with the tac cable that you have on my 55 TO35. For some reason it would not spin the tac. The cable spins counter clock wise on the TO35. Try putting the plain end in the tac and spin the cable ccw and see if the needle moves.. Also do as Steve suggested holding the cable while it is just connected to the generator. I had to use a cable that had no prefabbed ends and worked fine. Don't know why but it worked.

Point of info. Measure the length of you original cable. They come in various lengths with different types of connectors attached which was my problem.

Sorry for being too late, but the first picture goes in the tach.
Had mine out again today. Aftermarket cables do not fit well.
If at all. I had to file a new one down to get it to fit. On both ends.
