Water in Oil

Drained oil and water preparing for winter. After adding water, noticed water in the oil. Have not started the engine yet. Could this be due to a water pump failure or something worse? Thanks!

What tractor model and how much water? TO30's are prone to block cracking, I know I have had a few repaired. It could be water seeping by old cylinder o rings for the easier repair.

Looks like it might be a project. The z120 blocks were not as prone to cracks as the 129, so I would make room in the garage for an engine tear down to open her up. It may in fact be the "o" rings on the bottom of the cylinders to get at them you need to remove the head, oil pan, pistons and make an inexpensive puller to pop them out.
If when you pull the oil pan off and with a strong light you can look for any cracks in the metal web between the cylinders first to rule that out.

Keep us posted.

All of this can be done without pulling the engine off.

Dropped the pan and saw a few drops of water around #2 and #3 sleeve. Suspect the o-rings may be leaking a little. I'll have to add this to the list of things to fix in the near future.

Thanks!

Look VERY CLOSE for cracks between the cylinders.

Out of over 4 blocks i've looked at over the last 10 years only ONE was not cracked. Theywill usualy crack at the top where the head mates to the block too. But the head gasket seals that.

Before pulling the head:

Put water in engine. Put about 20 psi air pressure on the cooling system and then inspect for leaks between the cylinders.

AGAIN, look CLOSE for cracks between the cylinders.
