starter woes...

Ok so I had two broken springs in the TO20 starter. so I look around and buy a set of springs with bushings and brushes, they come, all good. But the springs I got are wound in reverse of the ones in my starter? so maybe they fit some starter that rotates in the opposite direction? need some help to find the right springs.

Wayne, from the above mentioned site, used to own a TO-20.
The wife's TO-20 showed up with the starter literally hanging out the side of it dangling by the starter cable.
Good luck with yours.

I have the starter from my 48 TE20 in it now, I ordered another set with the same springs but wound in the opposite direction this time, lets hope they didn't reverse the negative :p

What's reversing the negative have to do with anything? You mean if the polarity is reversed, the engine starts
and runs in the opposite direction?? So going from pos ground to neg ground makes it runs backwards?
This means the transmission is now reversed. 1 speed forward and 4 reverse.
This is getting to be fun.
I suppose then you have to run the 3 point on the front of the tractor so you can plow going backwards.
Better turn that seat around while your at it to.....Yep! Big wheels on the front and small on the rear. I
suppose now you have a front wheel drive tractor and steers from the rear.
Told you this was getting to be fun. Just think, now you have dual lights in the rear and one in front.
Running boards might need to be extended a bit....

haha, well I assume if the springs push down in the opposite direction meaning the kit I got was for a different model than the ferguson :p

the starter would be turning in the opposite direction, I will try to get some pics, I am not aware if all tractors engines rotate in the same direction, I suppose if the starter was installed from the rear of the flywheel it would have to rotate in the opposite direction to turn an engine in the same direction. I simply looked at the springs and they looked to be the same as I needed. the mistake was mine.

"negative" as in the picture, not polarity ;) I think farmals had the starters behind the flywheel, so the starter would rotate in the opposite direction to turn the engine in the same direction, or do I need more coffee? o_O
