TO35 timing

Trying to set ignition timing on a TO35 and can't find marks. I found marks on the front cover but nothing on the pulley. Also found a pop-out plug on the front of the bell housing on the starter side. How do I time this machine? Thanks, gregjo1948

Best to pull the starter then turn over by hand and mark flywheel or pull #1 and bring to tdc then you will have a 50 50 chance of having marks on fw in position.

(quoted from post at 18:43:30 08/27/17) The timing marks are under the plug, on the flywheel, NOT on the front pulley.

So I can use a timing light thru the hole?? Really hard to position an eye to see because the radius arm and steering linkage is in the way. Or do I hand roll it to TDC and look into the hole without a timing light??

I lined up the marks in the hole, clamp a flat file on the front bolster about 1/4 inch off the front pulley.
Shiny white paint on the end of the file and on the pulley. Start it up and twist the dist until the paint marks
line up. Automotive white touch up paint in small containers at the parts store.
Unless the wife has white finger nail polish. . .You could try red. . . . Oh Honey. . . .

Not sure if you've solved your dilemma or not.. The simplest
way if using a timing light is to do as Bruce has mentioned
and locate the marks in the hole below starter.
Next once they are lined up to TDC you can then go to the
front of the engine and configure something from either the
engine itself or the tractor to act as a stationary pointer.
Then you will need to make a corresponding mark on the
pulley that lines up with said pointer.

The following picture is of my pointer setup as well as TWO
marks on the pulley... the first mark that you see is lined up
with a pointer and that mark is 30 degrees btdc, the second
mark that you see on the pulley is slightly higher up.. It is the
TDC mark.

The reason I have a mark on my pulley at 30 degrees is
because that is where this engine runs best , so I simply use
that mark when I time the engine at 2100 rpm.
