when in reverse low range and particularly going downhill the tractor makes a ratcheting noise that sounds like it is coming from underneath the seat. I believe drive train is same as MF 35 and TO 35. any ideas ?

posted this on Massey page without much luck. ideas ?

thanks.

Make sure your hydraulic filter hasn't come loose in there. It could be rubbing on the ground speed PTO gear.

You can access the filter by taking off the access cover on the left side with the PTO shift lever in it. I had a filter come loose because it wasn't safety wired and was making strange noises in there until I fished it out.

I've got a 40 that has noise when coasting down hill. I thought it was wear in gears after 60 yrs'. No sound with power to wheels. Sometimes when applying brakes. It has no filter only newer pumps or newer tractors.
