MF 35 Hydraulic pump

I am currently restoring a 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 tractor that is fitted with a Perkins 3.152 Indirect injected diesel engine.

Whilst the tractor is split, I decided to remove the hydraulic pump to inspect and replace any worn components.

Once fully disassembled, there is noticeable wear on the pump pistons and valve bodies. The scoring hangs a fingernail, so I am inclined to replace the Pistons and valve bodies whilst the tractor is apart.

The dilemma is that the pistons that are fitted look like TE20 items with 3 grooves and no piston rings.

However, the valve bodies look like the later MF35 type.

The kit I can purchase comes with new pistons and valve bodies. Will these later type pistons and bodies run on the existing pump camshaft?

I'm not sure about the parts fitting, there were a lot of different pump configurations over the years.

But several years ago I went through the pump on the '60 TO35. Bought the repair kit, tried to put it together, every time I tightened the bolts, the pump locked up!

Found out the aftermarket parts were machined wrong. But, having access to a surface grinder, after several hours of grinding, measuring, assembling, I finally got it to work.

Unless you have access to the equipment, and are willing to go through the fitting process, my suggestion would be to buy the assembled pump. Cost more, but less hassle.

Don't know the situation elsewhere, but here in Australia, good new aftermarket pumps are cheaper than the aftermarket parts to repair an old pump.

Thanks Steve and Bob for your advice. A major kit is still $200 cheaper than a new pump so I'm going to have a go at rebuilding the old one. I'll report back and let you know how I get on.
