anyone ever try to replace the cotter key in the transmission sump drain hole
in a TO35 Ferguson tractor,
after all these years of being drug over logs, rocks, stumps, etc:
the legs of the key are finally broken off and gone,

just wondering if I can take the 4 bolt inspection plate off the bottom of the sump area and
(someway thread another replacement cotter key back into place)

I know from experience how valuable the key is to be in-place as my tractor does weep some transmission oil. do not want that weep hole to get plugged up.

anyone ever replace the key,

I haven't had to do it that way but I theorize that it would work just fine with the right set of pliers or long forceps.

Or feed a thin piece of wire in the hole from the outside and aim it towards the inspection cover opening. When you can get your hand on it pull it out and attach the cotter key to it then pull back through. Sounds simple enough........ :)

I had luck once by using cotter pin that was just barely too big and tapping/forcing it through the hole. The cotter pin flexed just enough to go through and it has stayed in for a couple of years.

I find a tight fit pin and spring open the head so that it is a little too big . Gently pull in the legs of the pin and tap the head in by placing a fine screwdriver directly into the inner curve of the underneath of the head . Once in spring the legs outwards , I've never had one fall out again after using this method .
