I forgot to install the oil slinger on TO30....how important

I'm in the process of restoring my TO30, just finished assembly on the engine after rebuilding the top end. I just realized that I forgot to install the oil thrower on the end of the crankshaft. ...I'm afraid it if take the timing cover and oil pan I will ruin the gaskets. What will happen if I run it without the oil slinger?

No slinger is not good , think not having an oil pump in the car in your driveway . Be careful an unless you used spray tact on gaskets they can be saved.. in a pinch Ive used BLACK silicone gasket sealer , it wont set up till air is taken away And won't close off any oil holes .
 
oil slinger is designed to keep excessive oil from the back end of a seal. No slinger might result in an oil leak
at the seal. Me? Fire it up and see what you get. Leaks? Well, you got educated and get to tear it apart again.
No leak? Put a label on the slinger and stuff it on the wall. You might need it next week instead.
 
I have been putting grease on my gaskets for years and with the grease the gaskets don't stick to the metal and come off almost like new. I wouldn't do it on a head gasket but paper works perfect. Since you just put it together the gasket shouldn't be stuck yet unless you used sealer.
 
Run the Engine.....if it leaks install the OIL SLINGER:

Thanks for all of the comments. I knew I wouldnt sleep well if I didn't take it apart and install the slinger, especially since I'm painting it. It on now.
