you know things are not going as planned when more tools wind up on the floor than on the machine. any who....I now need to get this spring compressed and re-tighten the clamp which as of now will NOT tighten. must have BEEN RUST THAT WAS HOLDING IT TIGHT.

Steve, I had the same problem on a TO-20: the diameter of the rod was rusted/worn down, where the clamp had been located for a bunch of years.

I moved the clamp further toward the dash, to a "fresh" section of rod that was still full diameter. That compresses the spring a bit more, which is usually OK, too.

I also "pre-mashed" the clamp back together with a pair of pliers, which seemed to help it grab the rod better. A pair of Vise-Grips and/or an extra pair of hands is also helpful.
 
Steve, is your cork friction disk still in good shape, and are the linkages OK? I had to replace a bunch of that stuff.
