here is a pic of my 58 to-35.

also were these machines originally grey and red ? (massey colors)

I like that grill. A chicken would be nice and safe in there.
No, it should only start with both levers in neutral. So there is a problem with the datant or rods under the switch.
Richard will know for sure, but i think 58 might have been the first year of the red and grey we have today... hey that rhymes....

In the UK, most tractors have the starter safety switch on the hi - low gear selector, so the (large) gear lever can be in gear, while the (smaller) hi - low leaver is in neutral. At least this is the case on my Ferguson FE35, my Massey Ferguson 35X , my MF 575 and my Ford 4000.

"No, it should only start with both levers in neutral. So there is a problem with the datant or rods under the switch."

I remember you saying that in an earlier post. normally I put both levers in neutral to start but I decided to try with big one in gear so now I am wondering what gives? will have to experiment with the other 35's.

where are ya Richard ?

I'm watching this post with Interest. I own an original 1963 MF FE-35 X (yes, not a TO-35) that has been in my family since new.

The HIGH LOW selector always has to be in Neutral to start engine. The main gear shift for the three speed transmission can be in any gear or neutral and has no bearing on the engine starting.

Always a great day when one can learn something new:

Thanks:

Bob...

Here I am: I have always been under the impression only the HI-LO shifter needs to be in neutral to start engine. I am no expert so don't hold me to it. That's correct not an expert in anything, I don't get in trouble that way. They started painting Red and Grey at serial number 176341 in 1957 which means the last 1,874 1957 TO 35s were painted Red & Grey they also used the new style hood and decals on the hood sides and eliminated the side emblems. The front emblem was retained with a off white background. The 1958 TO 35 used 12 bolts on the small end of the trumpet. I do not know exactly when they started using the 12 bolts as my very late 57 still has only 6 bolts. Okay who has a early 1958 TO 35 with 12 bolts???? Inquisitive minds want to know.

I replied to the question but when I tried to post it YT informed me that could not be posted. This is the third time I have tried to post something in the last 3 months and was not allowed to. I did not swear once so I do not know where the problem lies. Nothing political either. Maybe I better get a new computer.

Who? Me hit a wrong key? Not possible, I don't have a "wrong key" on here. Okay, try it again. The last 1,874 1957 TO35s were painted Red & Flint Metallic Grey then everything after that was painted the same. The last 1,874 also used the new style hood and used decals instead of the emblems on the sides of the hood. The front Ferguson hood emblem was retained but used a off white background. The 1958 models were suppose to use 12 bolts on the small end of the trumpet where as my very late 1957 still only had the 6 bolts. Exactly when they started with the 12 I do not know. I also was under the impression only the HI-LO shifter needed to be in the neutral position to start the engine. Of course I am not an expert on anything that way I can't be held accountable.

Again when I tried to post it said "this topic cannot be posted" Sorry I guess you don't need my 2 cents worth.

Neutral safety switch is on the high low side. Just look at the shifter and switch and you can see it's just forward of the hi low shifter.

my TO35 is a 1957 model, the serial number is 174616 it was Beige and Gray when new
it missed being red and gray by about 1,725 tractors.

but I fixed that,
in all my infinite wisdom, I painted it red and gray later.

my 1957 TO35
can be started with the gear shift lever in any gear,
but the hi/low lever must be in S for the tractor to start.

great safety feature.

was almost run over by a 1957 AC, D14 that would start in gear,
I did not realize it was in gear, was standing in front of the front wheel, reach over and started it up, it started right up and started moving forward,

I jumped back out of the way and was able to jump up on the back of the tractor as it went by and got it stopped,

I remember the experience as if it were today and that was 50 years ago,
why would AC not have included start safe to their tractors by 1957???????

(also why would idiots try to start them while standing on the ground) I was a 16 year old kid and knew no danger.

My Massey Harris 50 will crank in gear as long as the high/low is in neutral. But after almost getting run over by my 35 I'll probably stick to putting both in neutral.
