Ferguson TO20 starting issues

Hello,
I have a 1951 ferguson TO20 tractor. My coil was cracked so I replaced it. Tried to start it and it will just turn over and not start. Then my battery drained, so took it and had it tested. Good battery hooked it up to the charger. Fully charged then tried to start it again but this time the starter is dragging, kinda slow and then started smoking.
I am not a mechanically inclined person.
Can someone please help with some suggestions???[/b]

Is this a 12 volt conversion?

If so, that may be why the coil cracked, it got too hot if a resistor wasn't added or a 12v coil installed.

Might take a look at the points too, when the coil went out, it may have overloaded the points.

As for the starter, if it was smoking, there is definitely a problem. If it is a 12 volt conversion, you have to be really careful not to crank too long as the starter will overheat quickly. If there is a starter/generator/alternator shop near you, they can repair it better than aftermarket.

If you can tell us more about the electrical system it will help. Is it 6 or 12 volt? What gauge size are the battery cables? The coil that is on it now, brand and part number?

Besides what Steve mentioned make sure all the end connectors are really clean, this includes the nut side that contact the wire end connectors.

Battery cables 4 gauge
Coil part #27470 (external resistor)not sure if brand. No name on it except part #

I've had no problems with it starting up until now.

"Coil part #27470 (external resistor)not sure if brand. No name on it except part #"

If the coil says "external resistor", that means it needs a resistor in the wire that attaches to the + terminal.

If there is not a resistor, the coil will overheat, and the points will be short lived as they will also overheat.

You'll need to add a 1.6 ohm resistor, or replace the coil with one that does not require a resistor.

I looked up what a resistor looks like and my tractor does not have one. And it never has. When I replaced to coil I snapped a pic of it before just to make sure I put it back on correctly. I have checked it all again and everything is hooked up correctly and all test good. Except I'm not so sure it isn't the starter. It's dragging badly. Then after 2-3 seconds of turning over it will stop as if the battery is dead and the starter will start smoking.

I'm not sure WTH IS WRONG.

you need new harness so get that And also take out the starter and replace that, Be careful where you buy, as I got three bad ones in a row from chincy aftermarket suppliers. YT sold me a starter and it is great. If it did not have a resistor before, it should not need one now. However, do not bypass the fuse as this is all that will protect you from it happening again if in fact the starter is not the problem. But, without knowing why the coil is cracked, the possibility of needing a resistor still exists.
