to-30 conversion to 12v

I ordered a conversion kit and it came with a resister to put between the ignition switch and the coil. Why is it needed? Just curious. I have another to-30 that is 12v and it does not have the resistor.

thanks
steve

If you have a coil with internal resister you don't need the inline resister. The coil should have it printed on side. If your kit came with 12 volt coil check it. When you don't have a internal resister coil or one inline it will burn the points. I don't know if you can even buy a 12 volt coil without the internal resister now. If you do use the inline resister splice it on the battery(+) wire going to coil.

My Neighbour Converted his Ferguson TEA-20 from 6V to 12 V. The ORIGINAL Coil was kept in place, thus the need to reduce the Input Volts to the Coil to 6 Volts:

He also installed an Alternator with a NEGATIVE GROUND / EARTH:

Can you tell me what group size battery you are using. I Just brought my T30 back from WV to Md and have also ordered the 12v conversion but left the old 6v battery there.
