Gas leak around cut off shaft on sediment bowl

My TO 20 has developed a bad gas leak around the cut off shaft on the sediment bowl. I have tightened the nut on the shaft all it will. What
type material was used for packing on this shaft and is the packing still avaible?
Thanks for any and all replies.

When you say cut off shaft on the sediment bowl do you mean either of these?

I am asking about the sediment bowl under the gas tank not the carburetor bowl. Thanks for your reply.

A few twists of teased hemp rope fibres will do . Or if you have some cotton caulking as used by wooden boat builders . Grease it first , not to help seal but to make the fibres more likely to conform to the right shape .

Graphite faucet stem packing (NOT Teflon!) from an "old-school" hardware/plumbing store will work, too.

If it's an aftermarket replacement, it may have O-rings.

If it's REALLY old, it may even have leather seals.

In any case, you'll have to remove the nut and the stem, which means draining the gas tank.

Don't remove the old packing, just add some to it.

It really doesn't matter what you use, just need something to pack it in a little tighter.

Close the valve, back the nut out, wrap some string around it. I've even used strings from a red rag.
