Just bought the tractor was running but had a loud knock.Pulled the motor down to rebuild it ,took the head to the machine shop and he is not sure about the new vavles. the exhaust vavle is higher than the intake vavle.was wondering if anybody could help me understand why. thank you

Higher than the other, are you talking about on the top side where the rockers are? Or the internal side. If top side do you have the valve caps
that the rockers push on? Also the knock is probably bearing related.
Part 24,25,or 29

The difference is on the the top side, the guy at the machine shop said his supplier told him the valves he send did not need the stem caps ,do you think they could have sent the wrong valve.I am replacing the bearings and had to have the crank shaft turned it was scared bad. thank you so much for replying i really appreciate it .

I think, which may be wrong, that the top of the valve springs should all sit fairly evenly with the caps installed. If those without are even with
those with than it is fine. The caps would be a wear item that is easily replaced rather than the valve stem. I just put a to35 back together that
didn't have caps on half the valves and put caps on the missing ones for that reason. Don't forget to measure the lash on the crank .003-.007
using the shims you took out.

thank you for your help with the valves the machine shop finally said they had the wrong exhaust valves. but now they turned the crank to .030 over and I ordered 030 main bearings but when torqued crank wont turn. any suggestion.

You mean 'thicker' than the intake valves? I think back then that was because of the extra heat in the exhaust chamber. As long as they seat, they will work. So? the journals were ground down to -.0030"? Is this a machine shop doing this with you?
Like Tom's, i had a couple engines with caps just on the exhaust stems, not the intakes. Just a matter of adjusting the threads for with or without. You got a manual?

yes I have the manual and it looks like the valves are all seated good. Yes sir it is a machine shop that is doing the work for me. He ground the crank and told me to order .030 main bearings and .010 rod bearings. thanks for your help.
