To35 won't start

Hi all, i just bought my 1st tractor about 6
months ago,and everything was going great
until this morning. I changed the hydraulic
oil, and when I went to start it again, it
cranked 2x then stopped dead. Nothing
happens when you press the ignition. What
could have broken to cause it to stop so
suddenly? I think the problems electrical,
but I've never done that kind of thing
before so I don't know where to start/how to
test each part. Any help?

If it helps, It's a '56, 6v positive.

Check your solenoid, they can go bad. Does it click when you hit the starter? With the tractor in neutral you could try a heavy gauge wire to jump the terminals to se if it has gone bad.

Do you have a voltmeter or a trouble light tester. The electrical system is fairly simple. To start you need to have the high low shifter in neutral or the safety switch won't let it start. I would first make sure that is not the problem and try to start it. If not start tracing the power with the tester. If you have the tractor ready to start, one end of tester on the ground and start with the hot wire that is on the solenoid and keep tracing all the wiring to the key and start button.

changing the hyd/gear oil should not be the cause of a no start problem.

first you need an ohm/volt/amp meter of some kind or a test light.

check battery and battery connections, a battery can go bad, reason to have the volt/amp/ohm meter or a test light.

could be the small gearshift selector switch, safety neutral switch, it must be in neutral or no electrical connection. this switch is located on the top of the transmission housing under the dash area, should be two wires attached to it. it may not be shifting to neutral when you shift the small gear shift to lever to neutral.

If your shifter handle is used to engage the starter, could just be a bad switch. If the key is used to to activate a starter solenoid, could be the solenoid. Either way, time to break out a test light and have a looking good time. No test light? battery jumper cables and go around said switches. Just make sure your out of gear while your playing.

That switch sounds like a likely culprit. I'm gonna head out and pick up one of those test lights, then start poking around. I'll let you know what turns up.

Probably the first thing to test is the battery with volt meter. A six volt system needs about 6.25 volts at rest to turn the starter properly. A 12 volt system needs about twice that voltage at rest. Maybe your charging system is faulty. After you get it running check the voltage across the battery while it's running and see if it is around seven volts (for six volt system), or 13.5-14 volts (for 12 volt system). Maybe your charging system is not up to par and the battery was slowly going down? One possibility.

Now, if you are wired up they way it should be, both gear levers need to be in neutral, if your funnel or jug hit a lever out of the 'detent' position, then the switch won't work.
Before you hotwire the starter as Tom mentioned, be certain you are not standing in a position it can run over your feet- just incase she fires up..

Ok, so I used the tester as suggested, and this box underneath with the wires sticking out is where all the electricity stops

Is that the start button? If so, power will only go past that when it is depressed with key on. You can easily test that by jumpering around it, with key on. Don't hook to the connections, or at least not to both, just touch. You could use a screwdriver. It's like hot wiring an old car. (Of course I never did that....)

If you have a spare piece of battery cable that would work as it is carrying a heavy electric load. I have also used two heavy wrenchs or screw drivers. It will arc a lot. Did you check the safety switch? That's the black rubber cover thing with two wires coming from it.

Update: it was the solenoid. Thank you everybody. One last question. I'm buying the replacement parts now, do I want the solenoid switch, the starter, or both? Not sure what the difference between the two is.

Solenoid is dollars. Starter is hundreds of dollars
Got to ask. Is your handle related to the 'Fabrique Nationale Fusil Automatique Longue'????
