TO 20 Have a 12 ault. conversion kit needs a negative ground have a positive ground now if I switch to neg. ground will starter run backwards ??

The wires that you are refering to, are they the positive wire from switch to coil and negative side of coil to outside of distributor?

On positive ground systems the distributor wire to coil goes to the + on the coil, and the hot wire from the switch goes to the - on the coil. When system is changed to negative ground these wires must be switched. Ammeter wires need switched too so the gauge won't read backwards.

Almost all starters are "series wound"; so when you change
the polarity of the starter, it changes both the armature polarity
AND the field polarity. This the rotation stays the same. The
exception is some newer starters that have permanent
magnets instead of field coils.

Starter no problem. In addition to the coil and ammeter info noted below, if tractor has lights, the bulbs will need to be changed.
