Valve timing my TEF engine in tractor

I have seen a very comprehensive timing example for a tef with the engine out of the tractor.
Does anyone have a how to for setting valve timing with the engine inplace.
I have the ferguson manual and the haynes, but i am not able to grasp the instructions they provide.
My first diesel.
I have been able to return the pistons to within less than half an inch from where they were when I pulled the head to free a stuck piston. But I know thats not close enough and i dont want to risk turning the engine over on the starter and having a valve strike a piston.

We'll need PCP to translate this. I don't understand the problem.
If the valves are in place with the springs keepers etc, then it all depends on the camshaft. If the camshaft is timed to the crankshaft properly, and all the lifters are from this same engine, i don't see how it can go wrong.
If you are still concerned, worried you might break something, don't use the starter, use a wrench on the front pulley.

YES, I'm sorry, i was way over thinking this. The only engines I have pulled apart before have been OHC and I had my self convinced that I would need to reset the valve timing in relation to the cam. But thats not the case here is it.
Sorry for the confusion.

yeeeeahh... i was thinking you was thinking OHCams... nope, ferries don't have that....
You aren't putting this back together with all that brown crud still in there RU?

No, once I got it moving I got into it with the pressure cleaner, but I did not want to risk my phone, so no pictures of that job.

just before the head went back on.

Nay bloody worries mate, she'll be right.
Soon you will look to the horizon, and say 'crikey! another bloody bush fire!'... but it will be Micheal's Standard engine starting up..

Well, when chattin' up Sheilas, the American accent was.... handier. 2 years down under and an eternity with a strine must have scarred me for life....
Hate to admit this... my 'X'? was/is? an.... evil... heartless... sinister..... 'Austral-Asian'. Sidneysider to make it worse. One day she was tearing into something like an old sailor... loud. An old yankee gentleman- from Vermont i think- heard her rampage, quietly said to me 'I never heard a Chinese lady curse like that before'.... i told him that is the ozzie coming out as her blood pressure rises. Too many steak and kidney pies in her youth..... he shakes his head, you think kidney pie caused that?
Here's a fair warning... last i heard she lives a bit west of Brisbane...
