To30 hydraulics

I have a to30 that when I got the lift arms didn't work. It had been sitting a while and thinking the system may have air in it I started the tractor with pto on and lift control up and applied air. After applying a little air for 20 seconds the lift arms raised. Now the arms raise but they raise all the way up no mater the lift arms control position. And they will not go down with the control lever. The arms will go down if I cut the pto off or I can go behind the tractor ( running with pto on) and push the arms down with the control lever up or down. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Check the control valve. Make sure the cross piece hasn"t come out of the control fork and make sure the control valve isn"t stuck in it"s bore.

I remember just after buying my TO-30 nearly 30 years ago that I had to do "something" having to do with the hydraulics, but can't for the life of me remember what. Probably something like this. About all I remember was going and buying the repair manual and a small part, then taking.....the rock shaft(?) off the back end and trying to get the new part worked up in there somehow. I remember it was quite tricky - not room for fingers; even young and nimble ones!
