Hello my step-dad has a 54 T020, the throttle lever always goes back to idle. We plow or bush hog with it, but we have to hold the throttle control to Rev the engine high enough to operate the implements under pressure. Could someone help me with how to fix this problem? Thanks.

I have no experience with the TO 20...I own and operate a TEA-20:

The TO 20 parts book indicates items 9,10,11,16,17,59,60,61 are all part of the Throttle locating / securing devices:

Possibly MORE pressure is required on the FRICTION Discs (# 9,10) by compressing spring, #16 ?

Only trying to help you. The TO 20 was built in 1948 through 1951. The TO 30 was built 1951 through 1954. If the serial plate is still on the tractor it should be on TOP of the dash between the steering column & the hood. TO 20 serial numbers were 1 through 60000, TO 30 serial numbers 60001 through 140000.

got the same problem with a TO-35 and a MF 50. both are a PITA to get inside the dash to work on. great Ferguson dash design. (not!)

TO 20 is about 24 HP & TO 30 is 30 HP. The TO 30 has a little beefier rear trumpets. The TO 20 dash is fairly plain where the TO 30 dash has a air intake on right side of dash and the key is on what we call the bump on top left of dash. TO 20 key is on the secondary dash down below. They are both GREY. You can look below the engine dipstick in CAST letters and numbers the first 4 digits is all we need to look at, it will be Z 120 or Z 129. Make sure you get the 4th digit real cleaned to make sure what that number is. The TO 20 used the Z120 engine while the TO 30 used the Z 129. Those numbers are very close to the cubic inches of the engines if they are stock.

The TO 20 uses the Z 120 block and the TO 30 uses the Z 129 block. Those numbers are very close to cubic inches, TO 30 has a little beefier trumpets. Look below engine oil dipstick and you can see the cast letters. Only need to worry about the first four digits, you need to get the fourth digit really clean to tell the difference between the two numbers. TO 20 dash is fairly plain TO 30 dash has a air intake on right side and the key is on what is referred to as the bump on upper left of dash. They are both Grey.

Wow! that's great to know. I will check to see that as well. I'm just learning about these things. We are shade tree mechanics, but don't know much about tractors. I appreciate you all helping.

This is not exactly a recommended fix, but it works for me. I did not want to take it all apart so I attached a piece of garden soaker hose to create some friction to keep the throttle level from moving around.

Thanks everyone, it is aTO30. We fixed the throttle by putting some tension on the friction disk ( we compressed the spring ). The only issue we have now is the lift wants to stay up. We checked the oil and is milky, so changing it soon.
