only one tire spins on F40

My F40 is stuck in the mud. When I give it gas to try to get out, only 1 of the 2 rear tires spins. Is there a way to get both rear tires to spin to get out of the mud?

You should have two brake pedals on the right hand side, there may be a pin or piece of plate joining the two. Remove/disconnect this so the two pedals can be applied seperately. Apply the brake for the wheel that is spinning to send the power to the one that doesn't spin. Alternatively you may have a differential lock (I don't recall if the F40 has one), if you do it will be a small pedal behind your right heel when sitting on the tractor, push on it while the wheels are not spinning and hold down on it until you get out. The tractor will not steer well with the diff lock engaged. Good luck, Sam

If it's like my old TO35 only one wheel pulls at at time, if by pushing one brake petal then the other to get each tire to pull, you are still stuck,
If like my tractor, it's time to call for help, you need someone to pull you out, do not tear up your tractor trying to get it unstuck,
When you do get it out be sure to check the transmission drain or weep hole under the tractor and be sure it's not plugged up with mud,
I'd it is plugged with mud oil can build up in the clutch housing and get oil on your clutch, ask me how I know this to be true and my tractor had a working up side down cotter key in the weep hole, I just did not run through any grass for a while after getting stuck to turn the cotter key,

One other advantage of the Ferguson system: once you get unstuck, if you ever get a post hole digger auger stuck or hung on something and it will not come out of the hole. You can jack one rear wheel up, place the pto in ground speed, place the transmission in reverse, let out on the clutch while holding down the brake of the wheel that is still on the ground,
The pto will turn in reverse direction unscrewing your post hole digger auger,

This option can also be used to unplug a corn picker, no jacking up of the rear wheel required,
Just something to know about your old Ferguson that other tractor manufacturer did not have back in the day,

It is doing this because that is what differentials are meant to do. This is why in the early 60's, MF started offering 'diff locks'. I have 4 tractors with this option, 6 if you count the 'off brands' and when you need it, you don't even think about tractors without it. If your feet don't have the skill and dexterity to work the brake pedals, a dry wooden plank stuffed under one or both tires might get you out, but once free, you got to stay out of there till it dries up. That's the fun of farming...

I tried applying the brake on the tire that is spinning. However, my brakes need adjustment and was not able to apply enough force to stop the tire from spinning.

I'll probably need to either winch it out or wait until the ground dries out.

Thanks for your advice

Chain a log or timber across the back tire/tires, and slowly release the clutch. Chances are the tractor will walk right out.

You are still stuck as we speak? Shovel a trench at an angle infront of both tires, find some 2x8's, even 2x6's just long enough to go up the trench you dug. then yea. Come back in a few weeks.

(quoted from post at 09:01:31 05/04/17) The F40 is still stuck. I have yet to try the chaining the log to wheel method

That video is great, cannot wait to get bogged now     Never seen that done before.

I remember as a kid digging trenches and sticking logs under the rear tyres to get out,,, These days i would jack it up if possible and stick logs under the tyres or get a bloody bigger tractor to pull me out... Good luck

I tried the log method. I chained the log to the tire that was stuck. The stuck tire came out but now the other tire is stuck. I'm going to chain a log to the newly stuck tire. I think logs on both tires will work.

It looks like you fell in an old cesspool. What is the chain hooked to? That log idea looks like a poster child for the undertaker business. You better-carefully- not a yahoo- pull that thing out of there with a 4x4, and if it is a cesspool, spring, creek marsh- year round wet whatever, don't go back.

Geesh, that looks like pretty well anywhere you go on our property that hasn't been well packed with gravel. I sunk the dump truck trying to turn it around couple nights ago.........had to dump a load of muck where I didn't want it and cut down a couple trees so I could get the loader in there to help...........spring is great except for all the muck!
