Hi, I have fitted a 12 volt conversion to my tractor. It was a 6 volt. However I have just fitted a 12 volt ring gear to the flywheel and the starter keeps catching the teeth and not meshing on occasion. Should I have fitted a 6 volt ring gear. Is there any difference? also is there a right and wrong way round for the ring gear when fitting!. Thanks

I have worked ONLY on TEA-20's,both 6 Volt and 12 Volt starting motors.(I own these tractors):

The 6 VOLT Ring Gear has TAPERED teeth facing FWD towards the STARTER drive gear:

The 12 Volt Ring Gear has TAPERED teeth facing AFT toward the Clutch/pressure plate assembly:

The drive assembly on my ORIGINAL 12 VOLT Starter protrudes past the Ring Gear. When the Starter is motored the drive moves Forwards engaging the Ring rear on the AFT side.

The drive assembly on my ORIGINAL 6 VOLT starter is positioned slightly FORWARD of the Ring Gear. When the starter is motored the Starter drive moves AFT engaging the Ring Gear on the FWD side of the Ring Gear:

On the TEA-20 I own, YES, it makes a different on the direction you install the Ring gear depending if it is to be a 12 Volt ORINGINAL Starter or 6 Volt ORINGINAL Starter:

Picture is of the 6 Volt Starter assembly on TEA-20:
