Re: TEA20 1954 Harry Ferguson Tractor

Here's my issue -

I am replacing most of the wiring on my tractor and the issue I'm going to have is I have a 12volt alternator which somebody must have changed the generator out years ago - now I'm sure I can use the (control box - voltage regulator) but I'm having some trouble where I should connect the P1 wire which comes from the alternator - and where I should connect the (F) terminal on the Control box/voltage regulator. Maybe the F - should be wired to the negative on the battery?? However the (A) terminal on the control box/VR should go to the key switch / which should wire through the tractor to the .5 ohm resistor to the coil then to the distributor.
This leaves the (P1) exciter wire from the alternator - this usually goes through a indicator lamp then to the key switch however the (A) terminal from the control box is doing this. Can any one help ??

thank you,

Stan

What kind of alternator?

If it s a Delco, look at the harness connector on the back of the alternator.

If the harness plug is square, about 5/8", it is an externally regulated alternator.
It will need a regulator. You might make the existing box work, would be a long shot though. That alternator requires regulated power to the field (not a grounded field) and the R terminal wired through the charge light to the ignition source. The BAT stud will go to the amp meter or directly to the battery

If the harness plug is rectangular, about 1"x1/4", it is an internally regulated alternator. It will not connect to the control box. Terminal 1 will go to the charge light, terminal 2 will go to the battery, the BAT terminal will go to the battery or amp meter.

If it is an externally regulated alternator, you will save time, money, and frustration by exchanging it for an internally regulated alternator, or even a "one wire" that requires, as it says, only one wire, connected to the battery.
