Hydraulic drain plugs

I have a TO30 that came with the property we purchased. This tractor stayed outside for quite some time. I have since cleaned an area in the pole barn so it is sheltered.

It appears water leaked from the shift lever boot into the transmission so I need to change it.

Underneath the tractor there seem to be two drain plugs. One near the clutch next to a cotter pin looking port that I was told was to keep oil from going into the clutch. The other is underneath where the PTO lever is located.

First question is do I remove both plugs?

Second question will pouring new oil into the plug on top of the transmission fill both reservoirs, if not, then how to fill the one near the PTO.

Thanks

Robert

There are at least 2, maybe 3 drain plugs, drain them all.

You may want to remove the 2 round inspection covers on each side, below the seat. Then you can reach in and swab it out somewhat. A couple gallons of diesel makes a good flush.

Once drained and dried out, it can be filled through the plug on top of the transmission, by the shifter. Or you can fill it through the inspection covers on the sides.

If you fill it through the plug on top, fill it slowly. The oil has to migrate from the transmission back to the PTO area and rear end. Filling it too fast may dump oil in the clutch! The proper level is to the bottom of the inspection cover hole. Don't overfill, it will get on the brakes.

The original oil was 90 weight mineral oil (not 90 weight gear oil, that is too heavy). The mineral oil will work, but may be slow to lift the 3 point in cold weather. A good substitute is 15w 40 engine oil.

Thanks to all that replied. After I posted this comment I went back out to the tractor and noticed indeed there is another plug so I have removed it.

Tractor Supply carries 90w mineral oil for tractors and I am going to purchase that to refill the case. i do not use the tractor much in cold weather so a slow lift probably will not be a problem. Thanks for the tip of pouring the oil in slowly. I also placed on note on the tractor to replace the plugs before adding new oil!!

This a great forum and again thanks for the help.

Be prepared for the massive amount of oil that will pour out !
I use a child's clam shell sand pit to drain the transmission oil , over 20 litres .
If you don't have a big tray then make sure you have plenty of buckets that fit under the drain hole handy .

Thanks. I found a web site that had a basic owners manual and they listed the content at 18 quarts which is a lot. I have a 5 gallon pan which held the contents. If I had not read that I would have gone out with my empty gallon antifreeze container and got a real surprise!!

I need some help on this as well.
I can't find the rear draine plug. Anyone happen to have pictures of it?
