TO20 choke lever springs back

Had a mechanic rebuild carb on my 1950. I noticed that the choke lever when pulled back to start when cold, would snap back if I did not hold on to it. I thought it should hold where I pull it back to? Got carb back after rebuild and it's same way, I imagine because mechanic just put everything back exactly how I gave it to him. How do I fix that problem , this was how I bought it.

I'm pretty sure that it is supposed to spring open.

There is no means to add friction to it.

If it needs partial choke, try setting the mixtures richer.

Note, the idle mixture works backward from what most carbs do, turning the screw in makes it richer.

It's doing what it is suppose to do.
An ol ingun trick is to use a 2 piece wooden clothes pin, place it on the rod under the dash where it runs best, then move up as the engine warms up. If these used the common 'choke cable', like in later MF's, it would hold a position till you pushed it in.
That carb spring is preventing itself from accidently keeping the choke on too long.

. Thanks so much for the info . I've never seen a spring loaded choke, so was unsure how to use choke and hand crank to start, at same time . I thought, how is one person supposed to start this alone, never considered using a clothes pin for a clamp.

I believe if you would look at the choke rod holder just in front of the choke knob if you will raise it up after you pull it towards you it was made smaller at the top so the rod would get pinched up into that smaller area.

Thanks for your input , but unfortunately, that is not the case here. The hole is perfectly round. The previous gentlemen are correct. I will use a clothes pin trick when I hand crank my Fergie.

Neither one of my Fergies had it when I got them but the rebuild kit came with a spring for the choke and I put it on the 35. It doesn't often need much for choke unless it's really cold out. The 202 really should have the spring added because sometimes if I'm going up a steep incline the choke lever will just "fall" backwards and it starts sputtering and belching the black smoke.

I'm glad its functioning as it should . Like I said before, it's not the most convenient type of operation at all times, in every situation, but I understand the concept and how it helped keep some from forgetting to release choke after start up. Ferguson was very smart to incorporate the features he did, like the stater feature on the stick shift to prevent start up in gear. He was ahead of his competition for sure.
