TO35 Oil PIS

HI All, I'm new to this form and looking for help. I have a TO35 that I picked up about a year ago. Today when I was your raking I noticed that when I first started her up oil psi was at normal spot on color gage (about at mid point) after using for about an hour oil psi dropped to just stay inside the normal or green on gage.
I'm looking for info on what can cause it?

How many hours have you ran this TO 35 under load since purchasing.?

Where was the OIL GAUGE registering with Engine up to Operating Temperature (Coolant) and under Load in the past?

Have you changed both Engine OIL and Engine OIL FILTER? If so, how many hours on this OIL/Filter change?

What WEIGHT of OIL is in Engine?

Verify OIL level In Engine.

Verify if the GAUGE is correct?

Install a GAUGE with a span eg. O>40 psi.

If possible "T" a Test gauge into the same line as the present Engine OIL gauge is connected to.

That sounds normal. As long as the pressure didn't suddenly drop from where it used to run, I wouldn't be concerned.

What happens is the oil thins down as it heats up.It takes the oil longer to come up to temperature than the coolant.

As long as the gauge is in the green with the engine up to speed, it is good. Dropping below the green at warm idle is normal, as long as it registers "some" oil pressure.

A good oil to run is 15w-40 diesel rated engine oil, for both gas and diesel engines.

I have a TO35: as others said, I think you and your tractor will be much happier with a good 15w40 diesel oil like (example shell rotella) or
equal,
Also be sure to buy a quality oil filter at the dealership or Napa,

My tractor maintains good oil pressure with this oil and filter combination,
I use that same oil in the oil bath air filter,

However if you live in a very cold north location you may want to use a thinner weight oil in the winter

Many people use 15w40 oil in the transmission, lift system, I have never changed from GL-1 90 weight mineral oil
Next time I change the transmission lift oil I may change to 15w40

They are good old tractors, but like everything else they require good maintenance.

Hello John Deer D ans to you questions

Have only used to move snow and pull some logs for wood so about 40hrs under load
has Sell 15/40 diesel oil w/fram filter this was done when I got and only ran about 40hrs w/oil
oil level is correct on dip stick
far as I know the old color coded gage is original (1957) thanks for info I didn't know what the psi was in motor and didn't think to try another gage, i have a good 60psi gage was going to use on my V-4 Wisconsin, I try that and see what it dose

maxxwell99 thanks for the info. I'm in west side of NC so don't deal with allot of cold. I do run shell 15/40 oil and a fram filter from O'Riley's. Once I get oil psi figgered out need to work on lift, wont hold a load when shut off, 3pt hitch will fall down with just a pole boom on it in about 15min.

Hello Steve@Advance,
What is a good running speed, I run at about 1/2 speed I guess. I don't have a tack due to person put an alternator on it just before I bought it due to gen shorted out and burn armature and shorted gen out.

My TO35 has all color gages, I was trying to keep everything close to original as possible. With oil psi issue and not sure if temp gage is correct would it be better to change them all to reg gages?

The engine should be governed to 2000 RPM. You can cheat it up to around 2200 safely if you need it for mowing.

If you don't know what the governor is set to, really need to put a tach on it and set it. To adjust the max RPM, push the dash lever to full speed, loosen the U bolt clamp above the governor, move the rocker lever until the desired speed is met, tighten it down.

You can buy an electric tach for permanent installation. It is for automotive, so not sure how well it will hold up to weather and vibration.
Tach

The 3 point is not meant to stay up with the engine off.

It has iron rings on the piston, designed to leak by some.

If it will stay up for 15 minutes, it's doing very well!
