input shaft between transmission and rear end

Hi All,

Quick question, My PTO blew up on we and twisted on both sides of the pump and up in the housing. After cutting it in several places and some careful disassembly I got all the pieces out.
Do get the tractor split I had to cut the shaft shown here. It is the rear output shaft from the transmission to the rear drive. The funny think is my looks different from what is show n in the manual and what I can find anywhere.
Anyone have any idea what this is or where I could find one that is not chopped in pieces?
Thanks

Your tractor doesn't have howard transmission in it does it? Shaft looks close to the one in the photo?

Well shoot! That there be a 1550 shaft. Most folks break the unobtanium gear in the middle of that fornastratus.
I should have kept the last one. Idiot me let it slide.

The shaft is the exact one in your photo, nothing I have seen anywhere matches that little shaft and I have not been able to source a replacement. If you have an Idea where to track one of those little buggers down I would really appreciate it
I do not know if I have a Howard transmission, This tractor was found in a field and brought back to life. It has served us very well till we spun the PTO out of it. best as I can tell it is a 52-53 Ferguson to-30

I am not sure what a 1550 shaft is, I cant find a reference to it anywhere but I have a feeling I just cut up something that is gonna be reaaaaally hard to find

Yea, the Howard Gear reducer coupling shaft part "s"
I will run down to WalMart and Grab one tomorrow. Ok On a serious note I am guessing this is a rather rare part, Anyone have any idea where 'd get one?
I will, of course, haunt ebay and start looking into my local tractor scrap yards but would appreciate any help if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance

Thank you all for the heads up on the Howard, I had never heard of it before and could not understand why the inside of the tractor looked so different from the manual

Last Howard on fleabay sold for 1550 and a bit. Locally there are two TO-35's for sale for the same amount.
I once went shopping for a gear for the wife's HUPP. First shop priced it at $650. Next shop dropped it to $450.
I kept looking. Your best bet might be to visit a local gear mfg or two and ask therein. You will not find that shaft without the entire unit, unless someone has a Howard with the center gear busted. There are a few out there.
Post a thread on all boards looking for a broken Howard. You might get lucky. Oh, the gear I priced, was about 2.5 inch diameter, 1.5 inch center cut out with opposing internal notches and about 1/2 inch tall.
Cute little thing. I got blessed by God and found someone who sold me updated parts for far less.

As Bruce said Post on all the ferguson ford tractor sites and maybe you will get lucky, or you can have one made up at a machine shop, or pull the howard trans out and put back to original parts. First I would look at the howard to see if it has any broken or chipped gears. Photo is the howard once you split the tractor which you should already be at that point. rotate and shift to check gearing. If you don't have a use for it, primarily tilling, although I do use mine also for planting, it might pay to take it out and sell it. If you take it out and go with original parts you can also stick it on a shelf until you find the parts and then split and reinstall it back in the tractor. The howard is not as popular as it ones was so the demand is not as high as it once was. Yes the last one on ebay sold for $1550, as Bruce said, but that was years ago. When I get them I sell them for $800 to $1000 depending on condition. The complete unit is pretty heavy and could run $100 to ship. Boxing them up is also a pain so it gets there intact and unharmed. Most people won't spend $1100 on an auxiliary trans and put it on a tractor that doesn't have live hydraulics which if you don't have could be somewhat a pain to run with a 3pt tiller. I have run mine with a howard rotovator and dearborn Tillit and they are both a pain to hook up and once hooked up are a pain to take off compared to your standard 3pt rototiller.
Another option, your shaft in the photo does not appear to look bad. Depending what is wrong with it you may be able to cut and piece one together from possibly a standard input shaft and trans/rear coupler. I currently don't have one out of a tractor so I can't say for sure the trans input shaft will fit but if it does it would save you a bunch of money.
