How Tight is too Tight

Well she is starting to come together
nicely.
Can with the pistons in no longer turn her
over by means of the crankshaft sprocket
only but if I put a wrench on the end then
she turns over no problem.

Too tight is when the starter smokes when first turning it over. Replace the starter and do it again. Your tightness is due to bearing crush of the mains and rods being squeezed upon the crank shaft. Add in some good fitting rings and now you have a tight engine. It's only been 38 years since I had an engine that tight. For the first month I could hear the pistons slide to a stop. Had several people who desired that engine. Bone stock and could nearly balance a nickel on the air cleaner. The first starter went up in smoke because the nose cone was mangled from the old engine and I was foolishly trying to save a few bucks with a known bad starter.

Did you use the procedure and pics. sent to you in your last posting "TEA20 85mm standard pistons and rings" ?

Here's an Engine used to Test fresh Carbs, and Distributor assemblies (timing and mechanical advance). Note the Oil Filter mounting bracket. Engine never used in Tractor.

By what means did you check the Bearing clearances?
By what means did you check the Crankshaft Thrust?

Hi yes I had End Play checked with a dial metre, all rings were checked in their liners for clearance prior to fitting. Bearings which are. 010 were checked by the engine reconditioners when the crankshaft was ground.
Wish I had your manuals. The one I have is good but not entirely specific to TEA20 Standard.
 
That is not uncommon.

Before the pistons are in, the crank should turn easily. The only drag you should feel is the rear main seal.

The biggest drag is the rings. Did you check the end gaps? Should be .004" per inch of bore on the compression rings. As the piston is being lowered into the bore there should be no drag. If any piston was exceptionally hard to get in, might be worth a second look.

Once the rods are bolted to the crank, and the engine has been turned through a few times, you should be able to slide the rods side to side within the rod journal of the crank. If they won't move with finger pressure, something is wrong.

Another thing to look for is the engine suddenly getting harder to turn when a single component is added and tightened.

Funny you should notice my work bench, it's an old cupboard sat upon two sawhorses😁. I am about to place it into a proper engine stand this weekend.
I can tell you these motors are heavy and need to be in an engine mount for my health. I have included a photo of a manual I downloaded but it's not a very good reproduction and as this is my first restore I haven't done myself any favours.

My late bother was a master Machinist......I was allowed to use his shop:

Another Oil filter adaptor...TEA-20....

Adaptor is 7/8" NF (threads into Filter Housing, Filter Housing tapped to 7/8" NF),opposite end threads into Filter, your choice of filter:

Loctite adhesive applied on 7/8" NF threads:

Tapped Filter to a NPT thread, where Tie bolt once was:

Aluminium Spacer block:

Ferguson Purist will kick and scream bloody blue.....:)

I would not worry if it takes a wrench to turn over.

Make sure an put some bolt/washer to hold the sleeves in until you put the head on.
 
Have you lubricated the bearings and sleeves ? Try squirting some oil around , I think you may be surprised at just how much difference that will make .
