I just purchase a TO35 was told it starts hard .I seen a video made made with it running said they had to pull start it.It was smoking raw diesel was told the injector pump timeing could be off.It has a standard motor in it pump and injectors were supposed to be rebuilt can any destine the process.how do you line up the timeing marks do I have to take front cover off is the something else going on.Thanks

What Year? Does it have glow plugs? If it doesn't have glow plugs it will be a bear to start unless it's warm or you use starting fluid.
There is a procedure in the manual that outlines the procedure for timing the injector pump.
With the cover off the front of the motor can you see the scribe mark used to line up the camshaft? Is the chain tensioner wore out? Big problem is the timing chain stretching and injector timing go off.

If you can see the scribe mark on the cam gear you want the line pointing to the center of the crank snout. On the left rear side of the motor you should see a small 1/4" hole, you will side a 1/4" drill/screw into that will engage a hole in the flywheel.

Procedure

1. Position the engine at 16° before T.D.C. with number one cylinder on compression. To do this, turn the flywheel in direct ion of engine rotation until the locating hole in the near side rear flange aligns with the hole in the flywheel. Lock the flywheel In this position by inserting
a 1/4" dia. (6.35 mm.) Drill/Screw. Care must be
taken to maintain tension on the drive side of the timing chain.

2. Fit the Injection Pump Drive Assembly to the cylinder block with the master spline of the drive gear inclined towards the engine at an angle of 45° from the vertical. The setting is not extremely critical at this stage. as correction can be made later by rotating the slotted mounting flange of the Fuel Injection Pump on the mounting studs.

NOTE.-The shims between the Injection Pump Drive Assembly and cylinder block must be adjusted to eliminate unnecessary backlash between the camshaft drive gear and the Injection Pump Drive Assembly idler gear. Steel shims .006" (.15 mm.) and .010" (.25 mm.) thick respectively are available for this purpose.

A paper gasket must be fitted on each side of the sh i m pack in order to prevent oil leakage. At the same time, care must be taken to prevent the gear over meshing. Backlash is specified as .004"f.005" (.102-.127 mm.)

3. Mount the Fuel Injection Pump to the flange. mating the quill shaft with the internal spline of the d rive gear-this gives an approximate setting for the pump timing. Ensure that the circlip type quill shaft retainer is fitted on the quill shaft. Fit the attachment nuts but do not tighten.

4. Wipe clean the fuel injection pump body and remove the inspection cover. Carefully rotate the fuel injection pump about its mounting studs until the scribe mark "G" on the drive plate coincides exactly with the datum mark on the circlip timing ring. The accurate alignment of the circlip mark with the mark "G" is very important-mis-alignment of the "G" mark of 0.020" (t mm.) is equivalent to 2° (crankshaft).

5. Advance injection timing 1° (crankshaft) by swivell ing the pump anti-clockwise (viewed from front end) 0.020' (t mm.) measured on the radius of the mounting flange. This should align existing timing marks as scribed in pro duction assembly. Tighten the fuel injection pump attachment nuts and scribe a line, if necessary, on the drive case flange in line with the mark on the pump flange. The injection pump timing is now set at 17° before T.D.C.

I t is essential during this procedure that tension on the drive side of the chain be maintained and all backlash from pump drive gears be removed. This is done by removing the front cover plate or tractormeter gearbox from the drive housing, inserting service tool MFS.149, and exerting pressure anti-clockwise as seen from the front of the engine.

6. Remove the tommy Drill/Screw bar and turn the engine two revolutions in direction of normal rotation until it is possible to re-insert the tommy bar.

7. I nsert service tool MFS.149 and exert pressure anti-clockwise as seen from the front of engine to remove all backlash in the timing chain and gear drive.

The original positions of the circlip mark and
"G" mark should be found.

NOTE.- It should be understood that the characteristics of individual engines may require an Injection timing slightly in advance of 17° before T.D.C. and some engines received will have production settings of up to 19° before T.D.C. Under no circumstances, however, should the timing mark on the pump be advanced further than .040" (1 mm.) i.e. a setting of 19° before T.D.C.

Possibly "DrLoch" or someone could verify if this picture is of the engine type you have?

Welcome to be the proud owner like me who have probably the hardest cold starting tractor ever built. Get a service manual and start with that. There were two injection pumps used, early tractors like mine have fixed phase pump timing and the thermostart flame unit in the intake manifold. Later engines use four glow plugs in the head, and the pump has a light load advance unit. If for some reason the cylinder head is pulled for service, DON'T re-grind the valves and seats which lowers the compression. When mine was apart I put Deutz valves in and had any machining needed to get all the valves flush with the head. If I recall the pistons are flush at TDC, I have another engine that the aftermarket pistons are .020 below flush. Head has all new seats to get all valves flush with the head. It starts and runs worse than my tractor does, I plan on getting the pistons flush to correct it, I hope..
