My question again is "took my TO20 to local Votech. shop to replace PTO shaft seal in rear but they couldn't remove the PTO shaft out rearend! So they split tractor to see why but saw no reason!!! Our thinking is shaft is bent; so it would not come out! But now after put back togather it will not shift into PTO drive!!! My real question is now; what could they have done wrong and how do they fix it back to a working PTO as it was before they worked on it??? Otherwise the tractor is useless without a working left or PTO!!! Oh I could use it to pull kids around in a trailer for fun! LOL HEIP!!! Gene

I would have left it for the teacher to unscrew it. Failing that, I would have spoken to the principal and told him that it was going to a repair shop and they would be sending the school the hydraulics repair bill.
Beyond that, Congratulations. YOU get to take it apart and recheck all the failures that have not been done to your machine. I am sure once you take it apart you will find all the linkage that is disconnected and/or now broken. Go vo-tech!! sis-boom-rah! Hurray!

Is the PTO lever stuck or can it be moved back and forth? Maybe it wasn't installed correctly and its simply not moving the sliding collar. When they put the tractor halves back together, did they make sure it slipped back together smoothly or did they use bolts to draw it together which may have buggered up something. With the tractor not running and the clutch blocked down, try and spin the PTO at the back of the tractor with a socket on a drill. This should make the hydraulics work and the arms should raise. If the shaft won't turn, something is bound up.

I attended a VoTech school. Let me say first off, that we would never have returned your tractor to you in less than working condition. The fault lies with the instructor for not assuring that his students did a proper job. That said, the people who worked on it are students, and are learning, not professionals. I am sure none of us were experts in our fields when we started out. Without vocational schools we would have no welders, bricklayers, mechanics, and a host of other crafts that we all depend on everyday. I would definitely make contact with the instructor, or the administrators of the school to get this corrected.

first they should not have split it they should have pulled top cover but then they might have messed it up more.splitting only gets you to the clutch . i have pulled many PTO'S have had to use a slide hammer on a few but they still came out with very little trouble

The lever will not move back and forth stuck in forward position I believe; but the PTO shaft out back of tractor will spin freely!

you say pto spins freely is that by hand or when tractor is running if by hand they have the side cover on wrong. pto must be turning for the hyd. to work

I would start with removing the side cover with the PTO handle and make sure to re-install it correctly to see if that is the issue. How easy is it to spin the PTO by hand? There should be some resistance as it is turning the hydraulic pump.

I tried spinning the PTO shaft and the arms DID raise the up! That tells us the pump is working so we need to look somewhere else correct? But the PTO lever still won't move! Any other advice! And thanks so much for all the great advice every one is giving it's greatly appreciated!!! Gene

I would remove the PTO lever side cover and make sure its not bound up against something inside. It may have been installed wrong, or maybe they left it in place when they did the split and jammed into it when putting the halves back together. Depending on how full the hydraulics are you may loose some fluid when you remove the side cover so have a pan ready.

I twisted a PTO shaft so bad it would not slide out. Ended up splitting it and cutting the PTO shaft to take it out as 2 pieces. I can't remember if we went in through the top cover or the side cover. Just remember the lever would not allow PTO to either engage or disengage

This is where a manual comes in handy.
The instructor obviously never had one of these apart before, don't know what it is all about, and didn't ask for assistance from someone who would know... or refer to a manual the way a professional would do... sure ain't the kid's fault....
