I put new plugs in a friend's tractor and he says it runs hot. Also played with carb float setting, but I am thinking I put way to hot of a plug in a working tractor. What would be a good plug for a working machine? It does have a little oil burning, but nothing excessive. I put my normal hot plugs that I put in my parade JDs in it, hence my thinking that is leading to running hot.

Now that it's been run, take a look at the plugs.

Here is a chart with some examples of what to look for.

If you lowered the float level, that would lean the mixture. Lean mixture would be more likely to cause over heating. To check the mixture, if this is an updraft carb, with he engine up to temp, bring the engine down to idle, goose the throttle. The engine should take full throttle without hesitating or balking. A puff of black smoke is preferable.

Of course, check the obvious, coolant level, air flow, thermostat, radiator flow, ignition timing, etc.

ut the factory specified plugs in it & set float to spec & stop trying to be a "play-like" engineer!

heat range of the plug isn't what's making the engine run hot!
