should be able to make one for that kind of money.when I was in mowing business mowers used those ball joints.take old one to different parts stores or dealers.one time regular source was out and I needed one real bad and got it at john deere construction equipment dealer.i started keeping one of each on hand and with me.been 20 years but they were $4-5 then.not hard to thread piece of rod if that one is rusted tight.
 
Steve, here is a picture of the ends I got from McMaster-Carr. My threaded rod off the TO-30 was still good. Don't remember how much they were but pretty reasonable.

That's why I posted the dorman 41031 carburetor ball joint. You might be able to save your rod from in between. I think I just bought the one for my MH 50 for $7. The one you showed doesn't look too hot.
