1958 TO-35 23C Diesel Ring Gear Flip

Anyone know if the ring gear on a 23C can be flipped? I've done them in the automotive world. Mine is quite chewed up on the starter side.

Thanks!

i would suggest fit new starter ring that is if one is available also the gear on starter probably needs changing, I know the 23C is a notorious bad starter in UK so the starter has to work overtime but there are ways to improve this

Yeah...but I'm kinda stupid like that :)

The manual tells me not to use heat to install it which seems just short of impossible. I'm used to sticking the gear in an oven and then dropping it onto the flywheel. Has anyone replaced a ring gear on any of the other Fergie models? Can't see why the heat / shrink isn't a good idea. Works on the three trucks I've done.

Does anyone know if the FE35 ring is the same?

I am going to guess there is a warning about using heat to enlarge the ring, cause you might change the strength, it must have been- I KNOW- it was heat treated to a certain hardness, and if you mess that up, you will be really messed up. Slipping off the wheel, or softened teeth are as good as no teeth...

Shrinking the flywheel would work better, and that might be best using dry ice, cause that is a big heavy nasty thing to put in the plastic lined deep freeze, then carry out the kitchen door etc... dry ice around it while laying on a sheet of plywood, then dropping the ring in place, then propping back on the crank- don't sound so hard after all???

This is a question for John UK.... anyone know how he is doing???

nah - piece of cake!

When I did my auto rings, I heated them to about 200 degrees - shouldn't take the heat treatment outta them. Thought that was reasonable - but out of my great respect for Harry, I'll follow his advice and your (excellent) idea!

Thanks to all!

This is the Procedure from a MF SERVICE MANUAL (1448 811 M1) I follow on all FE 35,35 X and 135 MF 3 cylinder Diesels:

It does not mention the 23C Engine:

Now THAT was what I was thinking.....don't even have to go that hot from previous experience....perhaps the fit is tighter due to it being a diesel....
