Sudden loss of oil pressure (TO-20)

Started my TO-20 yesterday and noticed a strange noise as I was driving off to do some work with it. Looked at the gauges and saw the oil pressure was at ZERO. Immediacy shut it off and checked the oil. Looked like it was down a quart, but nothing serious. After a couple starts and shut-offs the pressure came back up.. I began working with the tractor and then noticed it dropped to ZERO again. I did notice a patch of oil on the rear of the engine near the air/oil intake filter.

After checking it again this morning, still no oil pressure, knocking at the top of the engine (due to lack of oil I'm sure).

So my question: Do I drop the pan and pull the oil pump, or is there any other ideas y'all can think of before I dug in deep?

Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

You also have an oil pick up tube with seals on the ends that might be sucking air. At this point, drop the pan
and pump, replace/rebuild pump. Fill with Vaseline prior to install to prevent cavitation upon initial start up.
Also replace rubber seals as mentioned. Might be good place to start.

Was the screen on oil pump clean? I bought a F40 that had a bad motor and the pickup screen was covered with oil sludge. He lost oil pressure and didn't stop. Seems the oil had never been changed. Just my 2 cents.

Yup, screen is clean.. put a new filter on it this past spring.. just dropped the pan and screen is still clean

Seems I remember a common problem with the drive key coming out of the oil pump gear.

The knocking sounds scary though, hope nothing was damaged!
