To-20 throttle lever

Hey friends, it has been a while since I've been on here. A while back some of you gentlemen kindly helpied me with my 51 Farmall super c.
I just inherited a 51 TO-20 that's been in my family since it was new
It was always well maintained by my grandfather. It's been shedded for 27 years. The last time it ran was when it was driven into the shed. The only thing it looks like I need to really deal with is a broken throttle lever. The lever is broken where the pin goes through it behind The dashboard .
Do you guys think this can be repaired by welding , grinding and re drilling a hole or do I need to find a replacement? If I need to find a replacement does anybody know where I can find one?
I'll probably have more questions as I get into this thing, thankful that there are guys like you out there who can help me with this tractor
Steve

I'm not sure where the pin is that you're talking about. Here are two pics of the linkage on my tractor. I don't know of a pin in any of it. :?

That eBay link is from a very reliable seller. Vermont tractor parts, David Shea. He is a contributor on the Facebook site ferguson enthusiasts, check out their site. Loaded with info and another option to ask questions.

thank you guys !

I need to get the the one I have off the tractor - I have a service manual ordered but not here yet.
looks like I need to remove the dash panel to get at what's left of the throttle lever assembly.
How does one get that long governor shaft out of the dash? Do you remove the linkage (u-bolt) thing at the front of the engine and then pull the rod out from the dash?

thanks
Steve

Hey ARK, Where and what name is the parts book you got that diagram from??
I have a parts book with exploded views. It has different item numbers and a way more exploded view. Yours has a better picture on how things are put together. Mine leaves a lot of guessing.
By the way any TO20 or 30 or TE20 handle will fit. Part #,
181 671 M91

I think I got it off of Ebay, but I can't remember who the seller was. Here are pics of the cover and the end cover, shows to be from August 1951
The drawings are a lot better than the 5/73 dated Massey Ferguson parts book I have, but the part numbers in the '51 book are useless. For example, part #17, the throttle lever we're discussing in this thread, is part #TO-9808. I'm guessing that when Massey bought Ferguson they changed to the Massey parts numbering system.

Thank you, my cover is very different. It even states, not produced by Massey Harris, ferguson or any of it's or it successors. Never noticed that before.
Its good and has correct part numbers. Just the exploded view is just that very exploded and tough to tell alignment. Yours was much clearer in this instance, thanks.

see that spring on the throttle lever? there is a pin that keeps that spring under tension I think - it is up behined the dash where you cannot see it. That's where my lever broke - right where the hole for that pin is

here is where it is...

Wondering why you would need to remove the long govenor rod? It looks like the throttle lever is its own unit. Wouldn't the lever just be removed at the ball joint or the nut and bolt and just be replaced? Not sure just wondering,

It's a bugger getting the throttle lever off, but I think you'll be better off replacing it than trying to weld it.
You will have to take the steering box off of the tractor, then the throttle shaft is removed by driving the pin out of shaft, which releases the spring and washer. ('course you won't have to do this part since it's already broken.)
This will allow you to lift the lever up out of hole in the bottom of the steering box housing. Then you may need to take a punch and drive the bushing that's located at the top of the shaft out of the steering box if it's stuck. Then you wiggle the shaft out the bottom.
Replacing is the reverse of removal, and it's a major PIA to hold the washer against the spring while inserting the pin. I used a cotter pin.
Good luck with the job.

Because the dash has to come off and the large round disc on the front of the dash that the throttle lever linkage connects must be removed.
I don't know how to get it off with pulling the entire government shaft that goes to the front of the tractor all the was back through the dash.
Unless someone knows how to get that disc off the end of the shaft that goes through the dash

Use paint to mark how the rod is situated with the governor link, then loosen the nuts on the "U" bolt to slide the rod out when you pull the dash.
If you want to pull the rod completely out, loosen the clamp that holds the spring to the rod that's right by the dash. That spring/clamp arrangement is what puts tension on the disc to hold the throttle position. Since you have it all apart anyway, I'd recommend buying a new friction disc.

Bill thanks for the help! I got it apart - the bottom of the throttle lever assembly was seized in the hole in the steering column. That's why it broke off I suspect.
