starter questions

I am in the process of rebuilding a te-20. The serial number plate indicates it is a 1949 model however the distributor is a Delco as is the starter. A solenoid was retro-fitted in place of the gear shift starter. I ordered a new starter however the nose cone did not fit. Changed the nose cone out with an old cone from the original starter. Worked great one day then the starter would not turn at all charged the battery cleaned all the surfaces no movement at all on the starter. Bench tested the starter and it worked fine. I'm sure that I'm overlooking something simple??

With the starter back on the tractor, use a test light or volt meter, have an assistant hold the switch to start.

Check for voltage between the starter post (not the cable end) and the starter case. If you have battery voltage there, there is a problem in the starter.

If no voltage, or very low voltage, start checking back toward the battery, checking each connection one at a time until you find the voltage drop. Do all tests while holding the switch to start. If a connection begins to smoke, or gets hot, that is where the problem will be.

Be very careful that the tractor is in neutral, and keep clear of moving parts. It could crank at any time!

your starter may be what we used to call "stuck". that means starter drive gear is stuck in the engine ring gear. put it in gear ,with key off and rock tractor by hand. you may hear a pop. if that doesn't work unbolt starter and pull it partly out. may not be the problem but might be. rick
